Confusion at fair: Wrong horse is scratched, field drops to three

ALBANY, Calif. - Golden Gate Fields stewards are trying to sort out what happened Wednesday in the final race on closing day at the Bay Meadows Fair, when a horse was incorrectly scratched. After the correct horse was scratched, only three horses were left in the field.

Darrel McHargue, a steward at both Golden Gate and Bay Meadows, said that Bay Meadows track veterinarian Dr. Don Davies called the stewards at Bay Meadows Fair prior to the final race and said that the No. 4 horse, Traditional Flyer, was being scratched.

Bluegrass Cat injured, retired

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Bluegrass Cat came out of his second-place finish to Bernardini in the $1 million Travers Stakes on Saturday at Saratoga with a fractured right hind pastern bone and will be retired.

Trainer Todd Pletcher said on Sunday that he noticed Bluegrass Cat was lame in his right hind that morning and X-rays revealed a non-displaced fracture. Copies of those X-rays were sent to two doctors in Lexington to determine whether surgery will be required.

Safari Queen rules Rumpipumpy

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Safari Queen flashed the form that carried her to a championship in Argentina when she won the $73,700 Rumpipumpy on Monday at Saratoga.

Safari Queen cruised to the lead in the stretch under jockey John Velazquez and finished 2 1/4 lengths in front of 46-1 longshot Gisellous. Pyrana was third.

Safari Queen covered the 1 1/8 miles on the firm inner turf in 1:49.22 and paid $5.90 as the 9-5 favorite.

"It was an easy trip," Velazquez said. "When you have the horse you can do anything you like."

New era begins at Woodbine

Horses train over Woodbine's new Polytrack surface Sunday. Wednesday will be the first race day on the track.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - When a field of six breaks from the gate at approximately 6:50 p.m. on Wednesday evening, Woodbine will become just the second racetrack in North America to race over a Polytrack surface.

The Polytrack opened for training on Sunday, and the finishing touches, including the outer rail and timer hookups, will be completed prior to Wednesday's ribbon-cutting.

A total of 84 horses worked over the new surface on Sunday, and another 140 on Monday.

Questuary gives new track a whirl

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Conventional wisdom is that closers do as well on Polytrack as front-runners and stalkers, and trainer Ian Howard is hoping that will be the case when he sends out stretch-runner Questuary in Wednesday's $125,000 Eternal Search, a 1 1/16-mile stakes for Ontario-sired 3-year-old fillies.

A new chapter in Canadian racing begins Wednesday as Woodbine unveils its Polytrack surface, which replaces the former main track.

Rush Bay may try International run

ETOBIOKE, Ontario - Rush Bay was a question mark heading into the Grade 2, $301,200 Nijinsky here at Woodbine last Sunday.

But Rush Bay, a Kentucky-bred 4-year-old who races for Mueller Thoroughbred Stable, turned out to have all the answers as he turned back all comers under jockey David Clark en route to a neck victory in the 1 1/2-mile turf feature.

Mark Basinger has been managing Rush Bay's fortune for his mother, Phoebe Muller, with the hope that the Nov. 4 Breeders' Cup Turf will be a realistic goal.

Shillelagh Slew by 6 1/2 in derby

EDMONTON, Alberta - Shillelagh Slew, ridden by Dino Luciani, drew off from nine rivals in the stretch run to record a 6 1/2-length victory in the Canadian Derby here Saturday. The Canadian Derby, a Grade 3, $300,000 race for 3-year-olds, is the showpiece of the Northlands Park meeting.

Columbus: Five straight for 'Dazzler'

Bevys Dazzler extended his win streak to five straight as he captured the $15,500 Columbus Breeders' Special for Nebraska-bred colts and geldings by a widening 2 1/2 lengths. Ridden by by Jerry Carkeek for trainer Herb Riecken, Bevys Dazzler ($19.60) covered the 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:20.60 over a fast track.

In the $15,190 Breeders' Special for fillies, Polka Palace, also trained by Riecken, rallied from last in a field of four to post a $10.80 win under R. D. Williams. She covered the 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:23.60, defeating the 6-5 favorite, Any Dream Will Do, by a length.

Prairie Meadows: Upsets fill Classic card

Upsets were the rule of the day during the 13th annual Iowa Classic Night at Prairie Meadows, featuring six Thoroughbred stakes for statebreds in various categories.

In the evening's opening event, Winamac Jack ($29.80) took advantage of a pace duel and rallied to score a 2 1/2-length victory over Crimson King Cat in the $74,566 Iowa Cradle Stakes for 2-year-olds.

A colt on top of his world

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - At the sixteenth pole of Saturday's $1 million Travers Stakes, with a victory aboard Bernardini secure, jockey Javier Castellano began pointing to his colt and gave him several pats on his neck.

"I wanted all the people to recognize that he's a special horse and he's the best 3-year-old right now in the country," Castellano said.
