Devil House ($4) wires Bassinet

CINCINNATI - When a horse ships in to win one of the big races at River Downs, he or she typically has come from Churchill Downs.

But not Saturday. Devil House led every step of the $100,000 Bassinet Stakes, proving a popular favorite while furthering her status as the pride of Fairmount Park.

"She showed her authority," said Terry Gestes, who trains Devil House for William Stiritz, the former Ralston-Purina chief executive officer who owns Fairmount Park in Collinsville, Ill. "She showed her class."

Woodbine: Essential Edge easily

Essential Edge ($30.20) blew away a good field under jockey Jono Jones in the $176,300 Ontario Colleen Stakes at Woodbine.

Over a course labeled yielding, Essential Edge vied with Devil's Bride and Sudsy Baby through moderate fractions. Jones asked Essential Edge to kick on early in the stretch, and they drew off to a four-length score over favored Strike Softly. Like a Gem finished another length back in third in the 12-horse field of 3-year-old fillies.

"She was relaxed the whole race, and she really quickened at the end," said Jones.

Matchup of form vs. class

The accomplishments of Splendid Blended, who won the Grade 1 Vanity at Hollywood last July and the Grade 1 Hollywood Starlet in 2004, tower over her nine filly-mare rivals in Tuesday's $100,000 Steve Van Buren Handicap at Philadelphia Park. Past glory may make Splendid Blended the favorite in the seven-furlong race, but it is not going to help her get to the wire first, and she will have her hands full with a sharp filly who has yet to win a graded stakes, My Lucky Free.

Chief Officer has an excellent chance to join the short list of fillies who have won Finger Lakes's oldest and richest stakes.

Mountaineer: Well-traveled duo meet

Tiganello and Bestowed have probably passed each other on airplanes or horse vans on their many travels this year, but they will meet on the racetrack for the first time in the $75,000 Labor Day at Mountaineer Park.

Few horses have racked up the frequent flier miles this year that Tiganello and Bestowed have. Tiganello, especially, has seen the sights North America has to offer, having raced at Keeneland, Delaware, Woodbine, and Saratoga in his four starts this year. Owned by the Wertheimer brothers and trained by Todd Pletcher, Tiganello, 5, raced in Europe up until this year.

Suffolk: Ask Queenie big favorite

Reigning New England horse of the year Ask Queenie goes for her third straight stakes win in the $40,000 Sunset Gun against fellow Massachusetts-bred fillies and mares.

Suffolk Downs racing secretary Jim Pambianchi was challenged to come up with a full field without weighting one of the most dominant runners to race in New England in several years out of the race. His solution: Weight allowances that will give the five 3-year-olds in the field a 13-pound break from Ask Queenie. The two older mares get eight-pound weight breaks.
