'Jenny' coasts at Arlington

Pretty Jenny, her trainer Christine Janks has said in the past, dislikes having dirt thrown in her face when she races on the main track. The way to avoid that is by racing in front of the other horses, which is what Pretty Jenny did on Monday at Arlington, going straight to the front under jockey Chris Emigh and winning the $41,875 Safely Kept Handicap by two lengths over favored Trippi Street.

Louisiana Downs: Distinguish gets up

Distinguish unleashed a furious rally down the center of the course to score a head victory in Monday's $100,000 Total Rewards Breeders' Cup at Louisiana Downs, equaling the five-furlong course record of 55.99 seconds. Lismore, a 15-1 longshot trained by Cole Norman, had collared early leaders Venomous and favored Unbridled Sidney inside the furlong pole, but could not last and had to settle for second. Top Commander, who now shares the course record, which he set in 2004, finished third, followed by Venomous.

Finger Lakes: Chief Officer cruises

As expected, once-beaten filly Chief Officer was far too fast for her male rivals in the 44th running of the New York Breeders' Futurity at Finger Lakes.

After quickly clearing her seven rivals, Chief Officer ($3.10), ridden by Fernando Jara for trainer Bill Mott, shook off a brief threat from Aspirant winner Endless Circle approaching the turn and effortlessly drew off by 5 1/2 lengths. Her time for six furlongs was 1:11.16.

In becoming the 10th filly to win the futurity, Chief Officer earned $150,311 of the track-record $250,310 purse.

Timonium: P. Kerney in a romp

P. Kerney captured his third stakes since he was claimed for $25,000 in January, dominating the $50,000 Taking Risks on closing day at Timonium.

A 5-year-old gelding trained by Ben Feliciano Jr., P. Kerney went right to the front in the 6 1/2-furlong race for Maryland-breds as jockey Joe Rocco Jr. put him in favorable position along the rail. P. Kerney was never seriously threatened and coasted to an 8 1/4-length victory, completing the distance in a track-record 1:15.31. The previous record for the two-turn distance was 1:16.60, set by Weather Vane in 1997.

Calder: Rehoboth edges 'Halo'

A rainy Labor Day weekend might not have helped the local tourist industry in south Florida, but it sure was a blessing to trainer Frank Gomez, whose Rehoboth took advantage of the rain and registered a half-length victory over How's Your Halo in the $80,000 Carterista Handicap at Calder.

The 1 1/16-mile Carterista was originally carded for the turf but had to be switched to the main track because of week-long rains. Rehoboth ($6), who has never won on grass, made the most of the opportunity, rallying from well back to overtake a stubborn How's Your Halo in late stretch.

Thistledown: Cakewalk for Cat Singer

Cat Singer stalked pacesetter Tri Uimet into the stretch, went up to make the lead, and drew off to a 6 3/4-length win over his nine rivals in the $75,000 Governors' Buckeye Cup at Thistledown.

Acts Like a King rallied from mid-pack to be second, 1 3/4 lengths clear of Count on My Word.

Ridden by Rodney Prescott, Cat Singer got the 1 1/4 miles in 2:05.94 over the fast strip and returned $3.20.

The race was marred when Not Broke Yet broke down after being a clear second 40 yards from the wire.

Another Ascot wins for DePaulo barn

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Trainer Mike DePaulo, with two entrants, looked to have a decent chance at getting the money in Sunday's $126,200 Vice Regent.

But while most of the stable's hopes seemed to lie on the multiple stakes winner Bad Hat, who was the 4-1 second choice, it was Another Ascot who saved the day as a 9-1 outsider in the field of eight Ontario-sired 3-year-olds.

And while Another Ascot led throughout the mile of soft turf under jockey Constant Montpellier, Bad Hat trailed and was eased in upper stretch by rider Todd Kabel.
