AUBURN, Wash. - Westsideclyde will stretch out to a mile for the first time on Saturday when he heads a compact field of five older runners in the best race at Emerald Downs, which will be run under $40,000 optional claiming conditions.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - The fillies division of the $60,000 Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society Sales Stakes begins the weekend that leads into the organization's mixed sale this Tuesday. The colts and geldings division runs on Sunday.

Horses who have gone through a CTHS Sale where the full commission was paid are eligible to start in their respective races. The 6 1/2-furlong feature drew a full field of 10 2-year-old fillies and goes as the eighth race.

DEL MAR, Calif. - After setting records for all-sources handle for four consecutive years, business dropped by 4.3 percent at Del Mar this summer, but the total all-sources handle of $582,604,451 was still the second-highest in track history.

The track released data after the conclusion of the 43-day meeting Wednesday.

Last year's all-sources handle was a record $608 million. The 2004 meeting had total handle of $580 million.

DEL MAR, Calif. - Horse Greeley capped an ideal summer at Del Mar for jockey Victor Espinoza by racing to victory in the Grade 2, $250,000 Del Mar Futurity on Wednesday's closing-day card.

Horse Greeley ($8.40) outfinished favored Great Hunter by 1 3/4 lengths, with Stormello another 1 1/4 lengths back in third. Prime Ruler, the second choice, finished last in the field of seven in a dull try. His rider, Jon Court, lost his left iron at the start, but got it back in the stirrup within 100 yards.

During an election drive last November to gain approval for expanded gaming at Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs, Ark., the track's president, Charles Cella, agreed to put up $1 million to establish a charitable foundation for the city if the referendum was successful. Thursday, he came through on his word, and presented the Oaklawn Foundation with a $1 million check to launch an organization that will fund scholarships for the area's youth and build a center for aging.

OCEANPORT, N.J. - Marty Wolfson sees the postponement to Saturday of the Grade 3, $150,000 Red Bank Stakes on the turf at Monmouth Park as a possible silver lining for Miesque's Approval.

The 7-year-old Miesque's Approval winds up on a course softened by midweek rain in a redrawn field that includes added early speed.

"I was hoping the turf would get a little softer," the trainer said. "It was so hard earlier in the summer. The more speed the better for me."

One positive that Polytrack brings to racing's table is its role as a catalyst for rare matchups. If not for Polytrack, a grass horse such as millionaire Honor in War probably never would race against contemporaries such as Gouldings Green, Alumni Hall, Greater Good, and some of the other accomplished dirt runners he will face Saturday.

Many trainers have come to view Polytrack as a fair middle ground for turf specialists versus their dirt counterparts, and that hypothesis figures to get quite a workout in the Grade 3, $100,000 Turfway Park Fall Championship.

Horse-for-the-course Your Bluffing will try to overcome Sinister G's superior speed and the class edge of Grade 2 winner Mister Fotis in Saturday's $100,000 Charles Hadry Stakes, a one-mile dirt race for older horses at Laurel Park.

The 11-race card, which also includes the $75,000 Humphrey Finney for 3-year-old Maryland-breds, will offer a $10,000-guaranteed 50-cent pick six on races 5-10. One bettor collected $7,499.95 by correctly picking all six winners on Wednesday's program, the first time the guarantee was offered.

ALBANY, Calif. - Santa Fe's wire-to-wire victory in his last start was impressive and looked like it was accomplished quite easily, but because Santa Fe was making his first start in seven weeks, trainer Matthew Chew was holding his breath most of the way.

Chew had told jockey Michael Baze he might be on a short horse, so "even though he was on the lead, I was agonizing the first seven-eighths of a mile."

Santa Fe won the race, an $80,000 claimer, by a length as Baze eased him around the Del Mar turf course with an open lead that allowed the 4-year-old colt to relax.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - Seven Secrets earned a shot in the Grade 3 $250,000 British Columbia Derby Sept. 24 with a workmanlike two-length victory over a game Forceful Intention in the 1 1/16-mile Richmond Derby Trial last Sunday.

Although the Trial was his first stakes win, Seven Secrets has shown that he can run with the best 3-year-olds at Hastings, and unless a very good horse shows up from out of town, he must be considered one of the favorites for the derby.
