Familiarity with track aids Party of Two

Perhaps the main variable in Thursday's Bay Meadows feature, a 5 1/2-furlong starter allowance for 2-year-old fillies, is the switch from Golden Gate Fields to Bay Meadows. All but one of the six runners graduated during the recent Golden Gate Fields meeting. The sixth, Party of Two, is the lone runner to have won - or even raced - here.

The race is open to maiden winners who have run for a tag at some point in their careers. Thursday's race features winners ranging from the $12,500 bottom maiden claiming level up to $32,000 maiden winners.

Downtown Sanger has most upside

ARCADIA, Calif. - Downtown Sanger was not supposed to win last time out. Few horses can win after breaking from post 12 in a one-mile turf race at Santa Anita.

But the improving 3-year-old accomplished the improbable. Despite the outside spot, Downtown Sanger raced wire to wire in the maiden race for California-breds, becoming only the fifth horse this decade at Santa Anita to win from post 12 at a mile on grass.

Principle Secret gets new rider

ARCADIA, Calif. - Jockey Victor Espinoza will replace Alex Solis on Breeders' Cup Juvenile contender Principle Secret, trainer Christopher Paasch said Tuesday. Solis rode Principle Secret all three starts, including a win in the Grade 2 Best Pal and a runner-up finish last out in the Grade 2 Norfolk Stakes.

"Alex Solis is a great rider, but we decided to make a change," Paasch said. He declined to elaborate.

Espinoza also will replace Solis on Paasch-trained Juvenile Fillies longshot She's Included, eighth-place finisher in the Grade 2 Alcibiades.

All eyes on Rochester Cat in comeback

CHICAGO - The third-level allowance horses and $40,000 claimers in the featured fourth race on Thursday at Hawthorne are pretty nice, the race fairly interesting. But later on the program, in a second-level sprint allowance for Illinois-breds, fans can see whether the high-level ability Rochester Cat flashed last spring has carried through an injury layoff and into the next phase of the gelding's career. If it has, Rochester Cat could emerge as a player in the Illinois-bred sprint stakes division.

Lucky Gamble on mini-streak

ELMONT, N.Y. - The fastest horses on the last Thursday card of the fall meet are in race 3, a six-furlong starter handicap with a purse of $30,000. A field of five older males was drawn Sunday, but 48 hours later Scott Lake revealed that The Student, an 18-time winner and the high weight at 124 pounds, would not make the trip from Delaware Park.

"He's not going to run," said Lake. "He was training [Tuesday] morning and he bled pretty good. He's going to the farm."

Young Dom dangerous on best

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - If he fires his best shot, Young Dom appears to be a force to be reckoned with in Thursday's Woodbine feature, a first-level allowance at 1 1/4 miles on the grass.

Trained by Debbie England, Young Dom won his maiden going about 1o1/4 miles in his first grass attempt in June. In a July 14 allowance, he ran out of gas in the stretch after setting the pace, but he rebounded with a strong showing in the third leg of the Canadian Triple Crown, the Breeders' Stakes.

European trio takes to the track

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Three of the four European candidates for Sunday's $2 million Canadian International had their first taste of Woodbine's turf course on a rainy and cool Tuesday morning.

A field of 10 is expected to be announced for the Canadian International at a special ceremonial draw beginning at 12 p.m. in the trackside tent here Thursday.

Bryan Colangelo, president and general manager of the National Basketball Association's Toronto Raptors, will be the honorary drawmaster.

Tagg considering BC for two

Don't count Barclay Tagg out of the Breeders' Cup just yet.

The way Showing Up won Saturday's Grade 2 Jamaica Handicap at Belmont Park has Tagg re-evaluating his plan to skip the Breeders' Cup Mile to point for the Hollywood Derby on Nov. 26. Tagg is also on the fence about the Breeders' Cup Juvenile with Nobiz Like Shobiz, who ran second to Scat Daddy despite a troubled trip in Saturday's Grade 1 Champagne.

American All Star upsets

American All Star ($26) made his first start off a claim by trainer Mike Machowsky a winning one, holding off Swiss Lad to win the $63,725 Bull Dog Stakes at the Big Fresno Fair.

Jockey Danny Boag put American All Star on the lead early, opened by five into the lane and had just enough left to hold off Swiss Lad, winning the one-mile race by a nose in 1:34.20. My Creed was third another 1 1/4 lengths back.

Machowsky claimed American All Star for $50,000 when he finished fifth in a five-furlong turf race in his first start of the year on Aug. 21.

Leonnatus Anteas pounces

Leonnatus Anteas overhauled the 4-5 favorite, Mike Fox, in the stretch before drawing away to capture the $251,200 Cup and Saucer Stakes for 2-year-olds at Woodbine.

Leonnatus Anteas stalked a quick pace along the inside under Jono Jones in the 1 1/16-mile turf race. On a yielding course, Mike Fox and Maccabi vied through a half-mile, and Mike Fox took control exiting the turn.
