True Metropolitan too strong to stop now

True Metropolitan wrapped up local divisional honors with a convincing win over Spaghetti Mouse in the Grade 3 B.C. Premiers on Sunday. His trainer, Terry Jordan, had planned to turn True Metropolitan out after the Premiers, but after considering how easily True Metropolitan won and how well he came out of it, Jordan and owner Bob Cheema may send True Metropolitan to Woodbine to run in the Grade 3, $150,000 Woodbine Slots Cup on Nov. 18. If True Metropolitan ships to Woodbine, Jordan will keep him there for the 1 3/4-mile Valedictory on Dec. 10.

Boldly Seductive tops Attfield duo

Trainer Roger Attfield will be holding a strong hand with Boldly Seductive and Dancer's Fan when he goes for his 300th career stakes victory Saturday at Woodbine in the $250,000 Princess Elizabeth Stakes. For Canadian-bred 2-year-old fillies, the Princess Elizabeth is run at 1 1/16 miles.

Boldly Seductive was a tired fourth when she made her debut Sept. 16, but she graduated in a romp Oct. 5, leading throughout in a seven-furlong maiden special to score by 5 3/4 lengths. She earned a 78 Beyer Speed Figure for the win.

Spruce Limerick a natural on turf

Spruce Limerick has some nice turf influences in her pedigree, and when the opportunity arose to get her on the grass last month, her connections jumped at the chance. The result was a career performance that stamps Spruce Limerick as the one to beat Saturday in the $50,000 Lady Luck, which is the closing-day feature at Louisiana Downs.

Mohawk plan: Keep Retribution within range

ELMONT, N.Y. - Retribution will again be the one to catch in the $150,000 Mohawk Handicap for New York breds on the turf at Belmont Park on Saturday.

The 4-year-old gelding, trained by John Hertler, has already demonstrated what can happen if he is left all alone. Retribution built an insurmountable lead in Belmont's Ashley T. Cole Handicap on Sept. 17 and held on for the upset at 25-1.

"I certainly didn't expect that," Hertler said. "He's fast and he doesn't want to be held back. He was able to get a breather, and I think that was critical for his finish."

Surface switch can't stop Society Hostess

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Society Hostess surely would have been the favorite even if Keeneland had not made a rare switch Thursday by taking the Franklin County Stakes off the turf course.

Whether Society Hostess also would have prevailed on turf will never be known. As it was, the New York invader made a sizzling last-to-first run on Polytrack to capture the $113,100 Franklin County as the favorite under Garrett Gomez, rendering the change of surface moot.

Bush sends out two tough fillies

ELMONT, N.Y. - Trainer Tom Bush has two strong contenders in Finlandia and Rahys' Appeal for Saturday's $150,000 Ticonderoga Handicap for New York-bred fillies and mares at 1o1/8 miles on the turf at Belmont Park.

Having the dynamic duo in the same stakes is not necessarily a blessing.

"They're both doing terrific," Bush said. "I hate running them together, I really do. They both fit the race, they're both doing well."

Bush is very enthusiastic about Rahys' Appeal, winner of last year's off-the-turf Ticonderoga by 8 1/2 lengths as a 3-year-old.

Chief's Lake, 'Bad Boy' shaky at short prices

ELMONT, N.Y. - When the connections of I'm a Numbers Guy elected to run their colt in last Saturday's Grade 1 Champagne, that gave any number of New York-bred juvenile colts and geldings an opportunity to win a stakes in this Saturday's $100,000 Sleepy Hollow at Belmont Park.

Surprisingly, only six statebred 2-year-olds answered the call for the one-mile race.

Chief's Lake and Bad Boy Rising appear to be the major players in the Sleepy Hollow, but there are enough concerns surrounding both horses to be leery about taking a short price on either one.

Familiar fillies meet again

Five months after Missy's Queen edged Free Bonus in the Shelby County Stakes at Indiana Downs, the two Indiana-bred fillies will have their rematch Saturday night in the $40,000 Merrillville Stakes at Hoosier Park going six furlongs.

The front-running Free Bonus, the odds-on favorite in the Shelby County, was unable to fully shake loose from Missy's Queen, who was never more than a length behind at any call. Missy's Queen moved alongside Free Bonus at the top of the stretch and steadily wore down her rival to win by a half-length in a career-best performance.

Clement has realistic shot at turf sweep

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Trainer Christophe Clement enjoyed a lucrative afternoon here at Woodbine last Oct. 23, sending out Relaxed Gesture to upset the $2 million Canadian International after watching Steel Light take the $500,000 Nearctic.

This year, Clement will be hoping to go one better when he sends out Relaxed Gesture for the Grade 1 Canadian International, Naissance Royale for the Grade 1 E.P. Taylor. and In Summation for the Grade 2 Nearctic,
