'Zeke' in tougher spot after two wins

SAN MATEO, Calif. - Has Zeke the Sneak turned things around as a 5-year-old?

Zeke the Sneak didn't debut until he was 4, but he comes into Friday's $12,500 claimer at five furlongs on the turf with two straight victories, earning a career-best Beyer of 71 in both races.

Whether that will be enough to win Friday is another story. Requesto and Rangoon Raquetclub ran one-two in a similar race Nov. 2. Rangoon Raquetclub has finished second in his past three starts, the last two coming at this distance for this tag.

Big plans for Showing Up

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - Barclay Tagg may have taken the conservative route with Showing Up this fall, but he won't repeat that pattern with the talented turf runner in 2007.

Tagg's decision to skip the Breeders' Cup and instead keep Showing Up with 3-year-olds paid off with victories in the Grade 2 Jamaica Handicap and Grade 1 Hollywood Derby, but is unlikely to result in an Eclipse Award as the nation's leading turf horse. A championship is what 2007 will be all about.

Sweet Breanna out to cure seconditis

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - It has been a rather frustrating year for trainer Steve Attard, who had 9 wins and 22 seconds in Ontario this year heading into Friday's card. Six of those seconds came in stakes races, including three by Sweet Breanna, two from Saskawea, and one from Ascot Bill.

"It's been a little frustrating, but we're still making money," said Attard. "They've earned more than $500,000 between the three of them. It seems like some of the seconds, we were the best horse in the race. Some of them, we weren't. Some of the seconds could have been thirds."

Royal Copenhagen class of field

Royal Copenhagen won the Grade 3 Pucker Up Stakes on Sept. 15 at Arlington. The catch is, that was Sept. 15, 2005, and Royal Copenhagen has not won again since then.

A Grade 1, several Grade 2's, a couple of Grade 3's, one listed stakes, and even a dip into the allowance race - nothing has yet coaxed a fourth career victory from Royal Copenhagen. But that shouldn't stop Fair Grounds players from making her the favorite in the featured ninth race Friday.

No Sleep eyes fourth straight stakes

No Sleep looks like best-bet material Friday night in the $100,000 Treasure Chest at Delta Downs. A one-mile race for fillies and mares, the Treasure Chest is one of four undercard stakes that support the Grade 3, $1 million Delta Jackpot.

The Treasure Chest is also part of a $50,000 guaranteed, all-stakes pick four that starts in the fifth race, the $100,000 Sam's Town.

Dirt just what Tasha's Delight needed

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Tasha's Delight ended 2005 on the turf, and after she was transferred to trainer Jeff Mullins for this year, he kept her on the turf, too. That didn't go so well. She lost four straight races. After Del Mar ended, however, Mullins moved Tasha's Delight back to the dirt and returned her to sprinting. That has rejuvenated her career.

Against the Law extends winning streak

Against the Law, the 2-5 favorite, won her third consecutive race when she captured last Saturday's $24,800 La Paz Stakes for 2-year-old fillies at Turf Paradise.

With leading jockey Glenn Corbett aboard, Against the Law ($2.80) drew off to an easy 3o1/4-length victory over Torrance, with Famous Gal third in the field of six.

"She started off her career a little slow," said Corbett. "But she's won her last three, two of them overnight stakes."

Against the Law is likely to point for the $40,000 Arizona Juvenile Fillies on Dec. 30.

Mr. Pursuit takes Governor's Cup

Mr. Pursuit was unbeatable this meet at Remington Park. He won an allowance in September, the $275,000 Oklahoma Derby in October, then the $75,000 Governor's Cup on the track's closing night card Tuesday.

Mr. Pursuit ($4) won by 1 1/2 lengths over Sampson's Son, while it was another neck back in third to Real Dandy. The Governor's Cup was one of two stakes on the program, with Slew By Slew ($8.80) taking the $50,000 Centennial.

Evangeline schedules sale for March

Evangeline Downs has announced March 18, 2007 as the date for its fifth annual John Franks Memorial 2-year-olds in training and paddock sale. The juveniles who pass through the ring will be eligible for a pair of $100,000 stakes named for Franks, the Eclipse Award-winning breeder and owner from Louisiana. The stakes will be run in August 2007.

Stemmans Inc. manages the sale for Evangeline, and last March a sale record was set when the 2-year-old Manhattan Model brought $105,000. The juveniles in the 2006 sale averaged $12,887. Entries for next year's sale close on Jan. 8.

Beulah adds five days for 2007

After a week of fine tuning, the 2007 racing schedule for Ohio's three Thoroughbred tracks is now settled.

The completion of the dates process was held up when Beulah Park refused to sign off until receiving Thistledown's 2007 racing schedule. Thistledown had expressed a desire to race additional dates in the 7 & 7 alternating-race program with Beulah, an idea that Beulah resisted.
