New mom Piermarini regains top riding form

Tammi Piermarini spent the summer balancing her career as a jockey and motherhood, with the scales tilted strongly toward being a mom. Since giving birth to her second child last month, she worked quickly to tip the balance back to her work by riding 10 winners in six racing days at Suffolk Downs, including four on Tuesday's card.

Watch for recuperating Shermanesque next year

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - While U D Ghetto finished seventh last Saturday in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile, his Tony Reinstedler-trained stablemate Shermanesque was far removed from the action despite having a legitimate claim to ranking among the top echelon of

2-year-olds.

Shermanesque recently underwent minor surgery, but should have plenty of time to rejoin his class on the Kentucky Derby trail, said Reinstedler.

Three leading juveniles clash

MIAMI - Who is the best 2-year-old stabled at Calder this season? That argument will be settled right where it should be, on the racetrack, when division leaders Straight Faced, Yesbyjimminy, and Green Vegas all square off for the first time in Saturday's $150,000 Jack Price Juvenile Stakes.

The seven-furlong Jack Price is the most interesting race on a 12-race Florida Million program that includes seven other stakes, all for Florida-breds.

Rousing Victory, Dave step up off big efforts

Adam Coglianese/NYRA
Dave will make his second start going a marathon distance in Saturday's 1 3/8-mile Red Smith.

Rousing Victory beat Dave by a length in the John Henry Stakes last month at the Meadowlands. If either horse is able to duplicate his Meadowlands effort at Aqueduct on Saturday, he should be in the mix of a competitive renewal of the Grade 2 , run at 1 3/8 miles.

Rousing Victory, trained by Phil Serpe, finished second in the Red Smith last year to Grade 1 winner King's Drama. He hadn't run that race back until the John Henry, when he overcame a slow pace and ran down Dave in the final furlong.

Father John's title on the line

Father John can secure his spot as the leading Indiana-bred 2-year-old Saturday night if he can beat eight rivals in the $40,000 Indiana Futurity at Hoosier Park.

A deceptively easy 1 1/4-length winner of the Hillsdale Stakes at Hoosier last month, Father John figures to be odds-on in the Futurity, a level of support he had from bettors in both the Hillsdale and in his maiden debut, which he won by nearly 10 lengths.

Pace may aid late-closing Gold Fish

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - The Maple Leaf Stakes is a source of pleasant memories for trainer Tom O' Keefe, who sent out his pride and joy Wings of Erin to win back-to-back runnings of the Maple Leaf in 1995 and 1996.

But the present will be on O'Keefe's mind at Woodbine Saturday, when he sends out Gold Fish in the $175,000 Maple Leaf, a 1 1/4-mile race for fillies and mares which has attracted a field of seven.

Gold Fish comes into the Maple Leaf off a fourth-place finish in the five-horse Maple Leaf allowance prep, a 1 1/8-mile race here Oct. 20.
