Eldon's Effort off stakes romp

Eldon's Effort was a 12 1/4-length winner last time out in the $66,000 Governor's at Zia Park on Oct. 29, a performance that will make him a strong favorite in Saturday night's $45,000 Bountiful Harvest at Sam Houston Race Park. A six-furlong race for 2-year-olds, the Bountiful Harvest also drew the stakes winner Sir Five Star.

In the Governor's, run at six furlongs, Eldon's Effort took the lead soon after the start and increased his advantage throughout to earn a career-best Beyer Speed Figure of 91.

Eagle Speed a bit light on Beyers

Eagle Speed figures to draw heavy support when he goes for his third consecutive stakes victory in the West Virginia Futurity on Saturday night at Charles Town. Based on Beyer Speed Figures, however, Eagle Speed is only the third-fastest runner among six 2-year-olds in the first division of the split stakes.

Each division of the seven-furlong West Virginia Futurity carries a purse of $25,000 and is restricted to juveniles who are West Virginia-bred and sired by West Virginia-registered sires.

Strong support on big day

As recently as two years ago, the Anne Arundel for 3-year-old fillies was a Grade 3 stakes. Considering the quality of this year's field for the $125,000 race at Laurel Park, the Graded Stakes Committee might well take a good look at restoring the Anne Arundel's status for 2007.

Another close one in store?

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Last month's Morvich Handicap was such a good race that they're running it again - sort of. The first five finishers in the Morvich were separated by less than two lengths, and four of those runners are back Saturday for the Grade 3, $150,000 Hollywood Turf Express at Hollywood Park, including the upset winner, Moth Ball.

Four others are in the six-furlong race, most notably In Summation, who comes off a second-place finish behind Fast Parade in the Nearctic Stakes at Woodbine.

Tango Mango: Catch me if you can

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - With just two days left in the meet, trainer Gary Demorest has too much ground to make up to repeat as leading trainer. Nonetheless, he's had a very good season with 39 wins from 181 starters, and he looks to add to those totals when he sends out Celtic Warrior and Tango Mango in the eighth race Saturday.

The $15,000 optional claiming race for 3-year-olds going 1 1/16 miles drew seven horses, and they'll likely be chasing Tango Mango.
