Top Flight DQ to be appealed

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - Marlene Brody, the proprietor of Gallagher's Stud, has informed the Aqueduct stewards that she intends to appeal the disqualification of her New York-bred filly Rahys' Appeal from first place in last Friday's Grade 2, $150,000 Top Flight Handicap.

Rahys' Appeal finished first by three lengths over Malibu Mint in the race, but was disqualified by the stewards and placed second because jockey Alan Garcia's whip inadvertently struck Malibu Mint in the face during the stretch run of that race. Malibu Mint was moved from second to first.

Discreet Cat inspires anticipation

Adam Coglianese/NYRA
Discreet Cat, winning Saturday's Cigar Mile, will point for a race at Nad Al Sheba on March 31.

In his first start in a Grade 1 race, Discreet Cat, 3, equaled Easy Goer's 17-year-old track record by running one mile in 1:32.46. He carried 124 pounds, spotting four to eight pounds to a field that included older graded stakes winners Silver Train and Badge of Silver. Discreet Cat raced right up on the pace through six furlongs in 1:07.75 and drew away from Silver Train and Badge of Silver without feeling the whip from jockey Garrett Gomez. Discreet Cat, who is now 6 for 6, earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 116.

Price Tag able substitute

Bobby Frankel has such great luck in the Grade 1 Matriarch Stakes that the Hall of Fame trainer can lose his best prospect and still win it.

Frankel had the Matriarch circled on the calendar for Karen's Caper, but she went to the sidelines with an ankle chip last month following a narrow loss to Gorella in the First Lady at Keeneland. No matter. Frankel reloaded on Sunday with the British-bred Price Tag, who landed the $500,000 Matriarch in her first start since arriving from France.

Showing Up much too tough for peers

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Showing Up needs new competition in 2007. The nation's 3-year-old turf horses did not give him much of a fuss in 2006.

Sunday, Showing Up ended his 3-year-old campaign with an emphatic win in the $500,000 Hollywood Derby, his fourth major stakes victory on turf this year.

In the Grade 1 Hollywood Derby, Showing Up ($3.60) encountered little resistance from a talented field of nine rivals. Ridden by Cornelio Velasquez, Showing Up rallied from fifth to win by 2 1/4 lengths over Obrigado. Ivan Denisovich, the invader from Ireland, finished third.

"She's a wonderful horse; she just runs her guts out every time," said Lorne Richards, who trains Financingavailable for K.K. Sangara. "She makes you look good."

Record within Baze's reach

SAN MATEO, Calif. - If morning-line maker Richard Somers is correct, Russell Baze should surpass Laffit Pincay Jr.'s all-time record of 9,530 victories at Bay Meadows on Wednesday.

Among his six mounts, Baze is listed on three morning-line favorites, two second choices, and one third choice.

After winning nine races last week, including two on Sunday, Baze has 9,528 victories and is just two away from tying Pincay's record and three from breaking it.
