Buddy's Humor wins off-the-turf Pan Am

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - Trainer Bruce Levine's first winter at Gulfstream Park had not been a memorable one. Until Saturday, when Levine finally posted his first victory of the meet and did so in a graded stakes when Buddy's Humor splashed to a three-quarter-length victory over Presious Passion in Gulfstream Park's $150,000 Pan American.

The complexion of the Pan American changed earlier in the day after heavy downpours forced track management to switch the Grade 3, 1 1/2-mile marathon to 1 1/4 miles over a sloppy main track.

Secret Gypsy gets her first graded win

Secret Gypsy, whose career has been slowed on several occasions because of untimely injuries, finally earned her first graded stakes win when cruising to a 1 1/4-length victory over Distorted Passion in Saturday's $150,000 Distaff Handicap at Aqueduct. The Grade 2 Distaff was marred when Zada Belle suddenly went wrong while holding a short advantage midway down the backstretch and was pulled up by jockey Ramon Dominguez.

Belong Again romps in sales stakes

Belong Again stalked Kip Berries from the start before powering away at the three-sixteenths pole to score a dominant 10-length victory in Saturday's fillies division of the Illinois Thoroughbred Breeders and Owners Foundation Sales and Graduate Stakes.

The $50,000 stakes - split into divisions for males and females - were open to horses who passed through the foundation's 2008 2-year-olds in training auction.

St. John's Gospel upsets Private Terms

Not for Silver couldn't get past the front-running St. John's Gospel in the $50,000 Private Terms at Laurel Park, falling short by a head in his bid to stay undefeated.

As jockey Hector Ramos had St. John's Gospel along the rail and on the lead through fractions of 24.46 and 47.88 seconds in the one-mile Private Terms, Julien Pimentel had the 1-2 Not for Silver just off the pace early.

Tizaqueena holds on in Fortin

The start of the $60,000 Fortin Handicap at Fair Grounds was a bit shaky for Tizaqueena, but the finish was perfect as the favorite held all challengers at bay for a half-length win over the late-running Sharbat. It was another three-quarters of a length back in third to Nan's Joy.

Siren Lure rallies in sprint

Last early as Red Arrow cut out fast fractions, Siren Lure flew through the lane to score his 15th career victory and edge close to the $1 million mark in career earnings as he won the $75,000 Golden Gate Fields Sprint on Saturday.

Red Arrow outhustled A Cat Named Snipe to take the lead down the backstretch through a 21.65-second opening quarter-mile as Siren Lure trailed the other four runners in the field, sitting 10 1/2 lengths behind the leader.

Hot Cha Cha cruises in Bourbonette

FLORENCE, Ky. - Phil Sims has been a trainer on the Kentucky circuit for most of his adult life. Saturday marked one of the greatest days of his career after Hot Cha Cha rallied for a six-length victory the $150,000 Bourbonette Oaks at Turfway Park.

"That's my richest win," said Sims, 47. "We liked the way the race set up with all the speed. She sure ran big for us."

Hicklin exchanges quantity for quality

OLDSMAR, Fla. - Trainer Judi Hicklin's phone rang the other day, and when she answered a voice with a distinct accent said, "Ms. Hicklin, this is Gary Player calling."

"I thought it was one of my friends playing a joke on me," she recalled. "I said, 'C'mon, you're kidding me.' "

The person on the other end chuckled and assured her that he was, indeed, the world-famous golfer and explained that he was calling to speak to her about the possibility of bringing her graded stakes winner Let It Rock to South Africa for stud duty after his career was over.

Large field expected for Sunland Derby

Kelly Leak is set for the $800,000 Sunland Park Derby on March 29 after breezing seven furlongs Saturday morning at his Santa Anita base. Jockey Mike Smith was aboard for the move and has the mount in the Sunland Derby, trainer Mike Machowsky said.

The 1 1/8-mile race is the centerpiece of the Sunland Park meet. It is part of an expanded, five-stakes Sunday card that will feature purses of more than $1.3 million. The card also includes the $200,000 Sunland Park Oaks.

Pair of upsets at Delta

Headstart and Garter Belt pulled upsets in the pair of 3-year-old route stakes run Friday night at Delta Downs. Headstart closed from next to last to win the $75,000 Sportsman's Paradise at 12-1, while 26-1 shot Garter Belt overtook pacesetter Southern Yankee late in the $75,000 Green Oaks.

Headstart ($27.80) won by 1 3/4 lengths over Code of Honour, while it was another 3 1/4 lengths back in third to And Music Came. Randall Toups rode the winner for trainer Steve Asmussen. Headstart covered the mile on a fast track in 1:39.42.
