Battle of Hastings can do it all

ARCADIA, Calif. - First, he conquered California's turf sprinters in the Grade 3 Baldwin Stakes on March 1. On Saturday, Battle of Hastings showed his dominance against 3-year-old turf milers in the La Puente Stakes at Santa Anita.

Overcoming an outside post in a field of 10, Battle of Hastings rallied wide through the final quarter-mile to remain unbeaten this year.

Ridden by Tyler Baze, Battle of Hastings ($4.80) was timed in 1:34.38.He finished 1 1/4 lengths clear of Smokey Lonesome, who was a half-length clear of Wall Street Wonder.

Dream Play controls pace in Comely

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - Up until entry time Wednesday, the connections of Dream Play were still wrestling with whether or not to run their 3-year-old filly in Saturday's Grade 2 Comely Stakes at Aqueduct.

After post time Saturday, there was no question they made the right decision to run.

After breaking a step slowly - which she often does - Dream Play sped to the front and kept right on going as she splashed her way to a 5 1/2-length victory in the $150,000 Comely at sloppy Aqueduct.

General Quarters battles way to Derby

General Quarters, with Eibar Coa up, punches his ticket to the Kentucky Derby with a 1 1/2-length victory in Saturday's Grade 1 Blue Grass Stakes.

LEXINGTON, Ky. - The 135th Kentucky Derby got its most lovable underdog Saturday when General Quarters - the one-horse stable of 75-year-old owner-trainer Tom McCarthy, a retired high school teacher and principal from Louisville - ran off to a 14-1 upset under Eibar Coa in the 85th running of the Grade 1, $750,000 Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland.

Racing near the early pace, General Quarters stormed to the lead from the outside after turning for home, then proceeded to a 1 1/2-length score over Hold Me Back, the 2-1 favorite in the field of 11 3-year-olds.

Terrel Gore's patience rewarded with stakes win

STICKNEY, Ill. - In vain, trainer Terrel Gore waited all fall and part of this spring to run Shadowbdancing in a two-turn dirt race at Hawthorne. Finally, the opportunity presented itself Saturday in the $52,500 Bonasera Stakes, and Shadowbdancing made the most of it, leading from start to finish under veteran reinsman Randy Meier to post a comfortable 1 3/4-length victory.

Code of Honor proves uncatchable

Code of Honour helped control the pace from the start before kicking clear by 2 1/2 lengths in the late going to capture Friday night's $50,000 Inaugural Stakes at Evangeline Downs.

Favorite Citizen, the 3-2 favorite, finished more than three lengths clear of And Music Came for second.

Trained by William Bennett and ridden by Diego Saenz, Code of Honour ($12.60) picked up his third career victory and his first stakes. A son of Omega Code, Code of Honour covered the six furlongs in 1:10.86 over a fast track.

Brother Terry goes wire to wire

Brother Terry ($7.80) led at every call en route to a one-length victory in the $50,000 Howard B. Noonan Stakes for Ohio-bred 3-year-olds at Beulah Park.

Trained by Donn Rowe and ridden by Edgar Paucar, Brother Terry was making his 2009 debut. Runningforspieght, the 9-5 favorite, was just off the early pace but could not get by late. Mr Shoe Fly Pie was another 5 3/4 lengths back in third.

Brother Terry covered the six furlongs in 1:10.44 over a fast track.

All Smiles relishes slop

Trainer Fran Campitelli only intended to run All Smiles if the $50,000 Dahlia Stakes was taken off the turf. He was also hoping for something other than fast dirt, since All Smiles was 2 for 2 on wet surfaces.

Campitelli got his wish when rain washed out grass racing and turned Laurel Park's main track sloppy. All Smiles ($8.60) responded by scoring her second stakes win of the meet, rallying to take the Dahlia by a length over First Ascent. It was another 2 1/2 lengths back to British Event.

El Brujo much the best

El Brujo ($3.60) won his first stakes convincingly at Woodbine in the $150,800 Achievement, an early prep for the June 21 Queen's Plate.

Win and Reign led along the inside through a half-mile in 44.73 seconds, while El Brujo stalked three-wide in second on the turn. El Brujo hit the front at the top of the stretch, before drawing off for an 8 3/4-length score. He completed the six furlongs in a time of 1:09.21.

My Bad outran Bucephalus by three-quarters of a length for second in the seven-horse field of Ontario-bred 3-year-olds.

Raw Silk sets Gulfstream turf record

Trainer Tom Albertrani won his sixth stakes of the meet and set a track record in the process when he sent out Raw Silk to an impressive 1 3/4-length triumph over 9-5 favorite Flibberjibit in Saturday's $50,000 South Beach at Gulfstream Park.

Forever Together runs like a champ

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Forever Together picked up right where she left off. Rallying from well off a relaxed pace, the Eclipse Award-winning turf mare of 2008 swept to a convincing victory Saturday in her first race of the year, the Grade 2, $200,000 Jenny Wiley Stakes at Keeneland.

Owned by the Augustin Stable and trained by Jonathan Sheppard, Forever Together completed 1 1/16 miles in 1:46.93 over a turf course rated good. Julien Leparoux, her main jockey during her championship season, was back aboard.
