Rail Trip will go for lead in Californian

Benoit & Associates
Trainer Ron Ellis said Rail Trip will be prominent early in Saturday's Grade 2 Californian at Hollywood.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - When Rail Trip made his graded stakes debut in the Grade 2 Mervyn LeRoy Handicap at Hollywood Park on May 9, he failed to make an early lead and wound up losing for the first time in his six-race career.

The tactics are changing for Saturday's $250,000 Californian Stakes, a Grade 2 race at 1 1/8 miles. Trainer Ron Ellis plans for Rail Trip to be prominent early, most likely on the lead, and hopes the 4-year-old gelding can show a career-best performance.

"I think he's a little better as a free-running horse," Ellis said.

Summer Bird snoozes in his stall Sunday morning after winning the Belmont Stakes on Saturday. He will be flown from New York to Kentucky on Monday before taking a van ride to Louisiana Downs.

ELMONT, N.Y. - The first four finishers from all came out of the race well, all will get a bit of a breather before returning later this summer, and all will be pointed to major 3-year-old races, their respective trainers said Sunday morning at Belmont Park.

Summer Bird, who scored the upset victory in the Belmont, and Mine That Bird, who finished third as the favorite, both will be flown from New York to Kentucky on Monday morning. Summer Bird will then take a van ride to Louisiana Downs, while Mine That Bird will, at least for a week, remain at Churchill Downs.

Left all alone, Carlsbad knows what to do

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - The one filly in the field proven to be brave on the lead was left alone on the front of Sunday's $150,000 Hollywood Oaks at Hollywood Park.

For Carlsbad, such a scenario was essentially a head start, and was all she needed to win the first stakes of her six-race career.

"We were hoping that would happen," trainer Jeff Mullins said. "She was very gutty in the last part."
