Another shot at the club crowd

A good-size crowd gathers before dusk last Friday for Churchill's first night card, only to find extensive waits.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Sarah Campion made the 90-minute drive from Lexington, Ky., last Friday night to Churchill Downs to drink beer, spend time with friends, "and watch racing," she said.

Undaunted by the inconveniences she experienced with parking, programs, concessions, and oppressive heat, Campion said she plans to do the same this Friday.

"What better way is there to spend a Friday night?" asked Campion, a University of Kentucky student majoring in agriculture economics.

In addition, the Donnie Wilhite and Sunny's Halo will offer $50,000 each for aspiring juvenile turf performers on Aug. 15 as will the Princess and Minstrel on July 18.

Churchill Downs/Reed Palmer Photography
Churchill's first nighttime card attracted more than 28,000 customers.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - All hands on deck.

Fort Prado shows staying power

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. - It's not like Fort Prado busted the timer, or blew away the competition. But any 8-year-old who can win a stakes race is worthy of note - and on Saturday at Arlington, Fort Prado won the Black Tie Affair Handicap for the fourth time in a 54-start career.

Trainer Mike Burgess said earlier this week that the Louisiana Downs-based runner is being pointed for the $100,000 Tiara. For fillies and mares at 1 1/16 miles on turf, the race will be run at Canterbury Park in Minnesota on July 25.

Win points Wrenice back toward stakes

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas - Wrenice has been the favorite in 14 of her 23 starts, so it was a surprise to see her pay $30 when she won an allowance for fillies and mares last Saturday at Lone Star Park. Granted, she did come into the race off four consecutive losses. But three of them were in stakes, and she had worked three furlongs in 34.40 seconds in preparation for the race Saturday.

Stall could have two favorites at Prairie

Louis Hodges Jr.
My Pal Charlie hasn't won since last year's Super Derby, but could go favored in Saturday's Grade 2 Cornhusker.

Al Stall is a New Orleanian by birth and upbringing, and bases his stable in Louisiana and Kentucky, with a dab of Saratoga tossed in. But Stall could be in for a big Iowa weekend at Prairie Meadows, with major players in the Iowa Derby on Friday night and the Cornhusker Handicap on Saturday evening.
