Return trip from Dubai

MIAMI - Jockey Jose Verenzuela, who earned international recognition by guiding Big City Man to victory early this spring in the Dubai Golden Shaheen, will return to Calder to ride on a regular basis beginning this coming week.

Verenzuela, an 18-year veteran, rode in south Florida for two years in the late 1990s before moving his tack to the Middle East on a regular basis a decade ago. His victory aboard Big City Man in the $2 million Golden Shaheen, a race won in an upset over Eclipse Award winner Indian Blessing, was by far the biggest of his career.

Fabulous Strike eyeing Tom Fool

ELMONT, N.Y. - After Fabulous Strike recorded an impressive victory in the Grade 2 True North Handicap here June 6, trainer Todd Beattie said he probably would wait to run the 6-year-old gelding again in the Alfred G. Vanderbilt at Saratoga on Aug. 9.

Apparently, Fabulous Strike had other ideas.

Given the way Fabulous Strike has been training since the True North, Beattie said Friday he now plans to run arguably the nation's top sprinter in next Sunday's Grade 2, $200,000 Tom Fool Handicap at Belmont Park.

Cable Boy out to make good on early promise

OCEANPORT, N.J. - Cable Boy, the early-season sensation of the 2007 meet, is slated to make only his second start since the fall of that memorable year Sunday at Monmouth.

The 5-year-old launches his comeback in a third-level $50,000 optional claimer at six furlongs.

"We'll look to eventually stretch him back out," trainer Pat McBurney said. "After this race, he should be good and fit. It will give us some idea of what level he belongs at. If he can repeat his 3-year-old form, we're in good shape."

Taking a shot in Bison City

Michael Burns
Politelyprecocious is coming off a fifth-place Woodbine Oaks finish in Sunday's Bison City.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - After he watched Politelyprecocious finish a well-beaten fifth in the June 7 Woodbine Oaks, swinging the filly back in Sunday's Bison City was not uppermost on trainer Mike Keogh's mind.

But with Milwaukee Appeal and Tasty Temptation returning two weeks later to run third and fourth in the Queen's Plate and invading Woodbine Oaks 3-4 finishers Miss Blakely and Wynning Ride having returned to their home bases, Keogh took a longer look.

Almost Time is expected to be the favorite in Wednesday's Chris Loseth.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - Trainer Dave Forster is optimistic that Senor Rojo will be able to handle a middle distance when he stretches out in the 1 1/16-mile Chris Loseth Stakes on Wednesday. The Chris Loseth is one of four stakes races that will be run at Hastings on a holiday card.

Senor Rojo hasn't run a bad race this year, and he appears to be peaking as he heads toward his first try at a middle distance since he finished fourth in the $107,000 Ascot Graduation last October.

Finallymadeit gets acclimated to track

ELMONT, N.Y. - Finallymadeit may simply not have been good enough to win the Stephen Foster Handicap two weeks ago at Churchill Downs, but trainer Javier Negrete says he didn't give his horse the best chance to succeed in that Grade 1 race.

Negrete, based at Calder in south Florida, said he shipped Finallymadeit to Kentucky too close to the race. After setting the early pace in the Stephen Foster, Finallymadeit faded to seventh, beaten 5 1/2 lengths by Macho Again.
