Rachel, Bruce impact Meadowlands meet

Bruce Springsteen and Rachel Alexandra, superstars in their respective fields, will have an impact on the upcoming meet at the Meadowlands Racetrack.

Blame it on the Boss for forcing the Meadowlands to run its first seven cards in the afternoon. Springsteen is playing a series of sold-out concerts at nearby Giants Stadium. To avoid conflicts, the Meadowlands will run matinees from Oct. 1-9 with a 1:10 p.m. first post.

That means the first stakes of the meet, the Grade 3, $125,000 Cliff Hanger on the turf Oct. 3, will be an afternoon contest.

Summer Song short price in Edmonton Distaff

EDMONTON, Alberta - Summer Song figures to be a short price in the $75,000 City of Edmonton Distaff for fillies and mares at Northlands Saturday. The 1 1/16-mile Distaff goes as the ninth of 12 races and is the supporting feature to the Grade 3, $300,000 Canadian Derby.

Summer Song, trained by Alan May, couldn't have been more impressive winning the 1 1/16-mile Madamoiselle Stakes here by seven lengths over Littlemiss Allison. She tugged jockey Mario Gutierrez to the lead while three wide, and when Gutierrez turned her loose she immediately opened up a clear lead.

Tasty Temptation, here winning the Wonder Where under Patrick Husbands, missed some training time and will not go to Saratoga for the Alabama.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Saturday's $125,000 Eternal Search came up light in numbers, with just five horses entered, but you won't be hearing any complaints from trainer John LeBlanc, who will send out Moonlit Beauty in search of some black type in the 1 1/16-mile race for Ontario-sired 3-year-old fillies.

"She's coming into the race great," said LeBlanc, who trains the homebred Moonlit Beauty for William Gierkink, father of Daily Racing Form correspondent Ron Gierkink. "I think our filly will run a powerful race."
