BOSSIER CITY, La. -- Five horses and their jockeys were involved in a frightening spill in Sunday's ninth and final race at Louisiana Downs.
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- As Nehantic Kat was rallying into contention around the far turn of Sunday's $110,000 at Saratoga, trainer Barclay Tagg's belief that his mare could win was starting to become reality.
Then, as he watched jockey Jose Lezcano, aboard Crazy Catlady, nearly put Nehantic Kat and jockey Rajiv Maragh over the rail nearing the five-sixteenths pole, Tagg thought all was lost.
"Here, I thought I had a good chance of winning and the whole thing's shot," Tagg said. "And then here she came."
DEL MAR, Calif. -- You Lift Me Up had been coming close in her races this year, but had yet to break through with a victory until Sunday, when she benefited from a patient ride from jockey Joel Rosario and rallied to win the $100,000 Solana Beach Handicap for older California-bred female turf runners at Del Mar.
You Lift Me Up ($9.60) got to the wire a half-length in front of late-running favorite Hot n' Dusty, who came charging from last in the six-horse field.
Bootleg Annie, who set a sharp early pace, was third, three-quarters of a length behind Hot n' Dusty.
Grand Slam Andre picked up his second consecutive stakes win on Sunday, when he rolled to a three-length win over Uh Oh Bango in the $50,000 Clever Trevor for 2-year-olds at Remington Park. It was another two lengths back in third to Western Forum.
Jockey Edgar Paucar won six of the eight races on the River Downs card Sunday.
Paucaar, 33, a native of Peru, swept the first four events of the day. Painted Forest in the first race ($3), Last Pruner($3.80) in the second, Savannah ($4.40) in the third and Apache Chief ($11) in the fourth were all won by Paucar for four different trainers. He then won the late double aboard Flatterdew ($13.40) in the seventh race and Accordian Man ($8.40) in the eighth and final race.
OCEANPORT, N.J. -- Eddie Broome was the big winner Sunday at the annual New Jersey Thoroughbred Festival, the day set aside at Monmouth Park exclusively for statebreds.
Broome was the owner and breeder of three winners on the card, including Lucky James in the $75,000 .
The bonanza didn't stop there. Broome was also the breeder of Hermosillo, winner of the richest race of the day: the $100,000 .
Way With Words won the other stakes on the card, the $75,000 .
Apprentice jockey Dusty Shepherd capitalized on the white-hot barn of trainer Jerry Robb to capture the riding title at Laurel Park's 11-day summer meet that ended Sunday.
Shepherd, 18, whose older brother Justin is also a jockey, rode 10 winners, six for Robb, to edge Anna Napravnik and Rosemary Homeister Jr. by one win to finish atop the jockey standings. Both of Shepherd's parents are also involved in the sport, Sherri as a trainer and Dave as a jockey.
Shepherd credited his agent, Mark Rosenthal, for getting him aboard live mounts.
ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Marchfield prevailed in his own little battle with Champs Elysees, and he won the war as well in the Grade 2, $277,075 at Woodbine on Sunday.
Marlang set an honest the pace in the 1 3/8-mile mile turf race, while being stalked by favored Rahy's Attorney and Woodbourne, who was supposed to be Marchfield's rabbit.
DEL MAR, Calif. - Jockey Tyler Baze, currently second in the standings at Del Mar, will miss at least one week with a broken finger on his left hand, his agent, Ronnie Ebanks, said Sunday morning.
Baze fractured the pinky on his left hand when thrown from his mount prior to the final race on Saturday.
