Baffert's pair punch tickets to BC

Zensational's win in Sunday's Pat O'Brien Stakes completed his sweep of Del Mar's Grade 1 sprints this summer.

DEL MAR, Calif. - Trainer Bob Baffert was inducted into the Hall of Fame last month and since then has set about showing everyone why.

On Sunday at Del Mar, he lined up two Breeders' Cup starters with victories by Richard's Kid in the Grade 1, $1 million Pacific Classic and Zensational in the Grade 1, $300,000 Pat O'Brien Stakes. Both races are linked to the Breeders' Cup through the Win and You're In program, so Richard's Kid has earned a berth in the BC Classic and Zensational in the BC Sprint. Both races are Nov. 7 at Santa Anita's Oak Tree meeting.

Budget tightened for new meet

Golden Gate Fields opens its second fair meet of the summer on Wednesday, with a lower purse structure than during the first fair meet, held last month. In addition, two of the four scheduled stakes have been eliminated: the $50,000 Somethinaboutlaura, which had been set for Sept. 19, and the $50,000 CARF Directors Cup, to be run on Sept. 27.

You Don't Pass rallies wide in Kenora

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - You Don't Pass ($5.70) came wide under Chantal Sutherland to notch his first stakes Monday at Woodbine in the Kenora. The six-furlong dash was one of six $125,000 stakes on the card for graduates of yearling sales staged by the Ontario division of the Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society.

Favored Drunken Love and Lake Secret dueled up front in the four-horse field, while You Don't Pass and Hosta Rica raced behind them as a team on the backstretch.

Iowa bans trainer after drug test

Nebraska-based trainer David C. Anderson has been suspended indefinitely by the Iowa Board of Stewards because his homebred horse Reach One More tested positive for oxymorphone, a painkiller, following his victory in the Iowa Stallion Stakes on Aug. 1.

On Aug. 14, the stewards received a report from Iowa State University stating Reach One More's post-race sample contained oxymorphone. Anderson sent his split sample to Louisiana State University. On Aug. 31, the LSU laboratory confirmed the presence of oxymorphone in Reach One More's sample.

Guipago gives Delmas breakthrough

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Guipago came close to giving trainer Analisa Delmas her first stakes win when he finished second, beaten three-quarters of a length, in the $503,200 Breeders' here at Woodbine on Aug. 2.

On Sunday, Guipago sealed the deal for Delmas with a half-length win under regular rider Tyler Pizzaro in the $127,400 Vice Regent.

"It's pretty amazing," said Delmas, who trains Guipago for the Fieldstone Farm of her father, Ron Delmas. "He's just been such a thrill for us - from the CTHS sale to the infield winner's circle. It's pretty much a dream come true."

Marquis handle numbers mixed

Marquis Downs wound up its 30-day meeting on Sunday with a total live handle of $882,440 and a daily average of $29,415. The respective totals for last year's 29-day meeting were $868,657 and $29,954, meaning the total went up 1.5 percent, while the daily average dropped 1.7 percent.

Marquis Downs, located in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, does not export its signal, and the totals derive from ontrack handle only. The average field size was 8.2 horses per race, and a total of $1,030,000 in purse money was distributed.

Soul Warrior scratched from Pa. Derby

Soul Warrior, the morning-line favorite for Monday's at Philadelphia Park, was scratched from the race after developing a temperature on Sunday, trainer Steve Asmussen said.

Soul Warrior, owned by Ahmed Zayat, was coming off a victory over Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird in the West Virginia Derby.

The Pennsylvania Derby is now down to a field of eight with Duke of Mischief, the Iowa Derby winner, likely to go off favored.

Smarmy repeats in Governor's Buckeye Cup

Smarmy put on a strong stretch drive along the rail through the stretch to get up by a head over the odds-on favorite Catlaunch in the $75,000 Governor's

Buckeye Cup Stakes at Thistledown on Saturday afternoon. Key Low finished a half-length farther back to be third in the field of 10 Ohio-bred older horses going 1 1/4 miles.

Smarmy had won this race last year in similiar fashion, and had not won a stake since.

Key Low, who was claimed for $4,000 three races ago, opened a long lead and had a 3 1/2-length advantage at the eighth pole.

Mine That Bird breezes at Ruidoso

Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird breezed a half-mile in 48 seconds Monday morning at Ruidoso Downs in New Mexico. He is spending a brief period in the state en route to Southern California, and was to lead the post parade for the $1.9 million All American Futurity for Quarter Horses on Monday.

Mine That Bird worked at about 7:15 a.m. under Ruidoso-based jockey Martin Bourdieu.

"He looked real sharp," said Chip Woolley, who trains Mine That Bird. "I was real pleased with his work."
