Monmouth gets safety approval

The National Thoroughbred Racing Association's Safety and Integrity Alliance has added Monmouth Park in Oceanport, N.J., to its list of fully accredited racetracks, the organization announced on Tuesday.

To be accredited through the voluntary program, tracks must comply with requirements issued by the alliance in a variety of areas considered to be important to safety.

Barbara D. Livingston

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Saratoga Sinner's stay on the Triple Crown trail was short-lived. A knee injury knocked him out of contention for the Kentucky Derby shortly after he won the Grade 3 Holy Bull at Gulfstream at the end of January.

Now fully recovered from surgery, Saratoga Sinner is eyeing the Travers Stakes on Aug. 29, and following a sharp workout here on Tuesday, he may just prep for it in Saturday's Grade 2, $500,000 Jim Dandy.

Nakatani back at full strength

Benoit & Associates

DEL MAR, Calif. - For much of the past five years, jockey Corey Nakatani has spent as much time in the doctor's office as at the racetrack - fractured vertebra, dislocated ankle, fractured collarbone, er, collarbones. Yet he has come back strong this summer at Del Mar, appears healthier than ever, and last weekend moved into second place all-time in stakes wins at Del Mar by guiding Global Hunter to victory in the Grade 1 Eddie Read Stakes.

Seattle Smooth probably out for the year

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Seattle Smooth, perhaps the second-best older filly or mare in the country behind Zenyatta, will most likely not race again this year due to minor issues that have prompted her connections to give her a 60-day break.

Seattle Smooth is 3 for 3 this year - and unbeaten in five starts on fast dirt - including a victory in the Grade 1 Ogden Phipps at Belmont Park on June 13. She was originally being pointed to Sunday's Grade 1 Go for Wand Handicap at Saratoga.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - It won't take long for trainer Steve Asmussen to know how good of a Saratoga meet he is going to have this year. And it will have nothing to do with Rachel Alexandra.

Asmussen sends out two major contenders in both the Schuylerville and Sanford, the first two graded stakes of the meet. On Wednesday, he also sends out first-time starters Magic Tiger and Macjoey in maiden races, and on Thursday, he'll start the second-time starter Kinsey.

Dominguez Spa-bound after record meet

Barbara D. Livingston
Ramon Dominguez rode 98 winners at the spring-summer Belmont meet, breaking Angel Cordero Jr.'s record of 92 that dated to 1982.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - It's one thing to dominate the jockey standings at Aqueduct in the winter, when many of New York's premier riders migrate south to Gulfstream Park. It's another to dominate the jockey standings at Belmont Park, when those same riders return, vying for the same choice mounts.

Hoping for good weather and Rachel

Barbara D. Livingston
Saratoga officils are hopeful Rachel Alexandra will race at the meet.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - With a little cooperation from Mother Nature - and Jess Jackson - this has the potential to be a sensational summer at Saratoga.

As the New York Racing Association prepares to open the gates Wednesday on the 141st season at the Spa - 36 days of racing through Labor Day, Sept. 7 - two of the biggest questions are what will the weather be and will Rachel Alexandra, the superstar filly owned by Jackson's Stonestreet Stable, run at the meet?

The answers do not come easily.
