Connections enjoy big day at Northlands

For the second year in a row, trainer Cody Anderson and owner-breeder Abe Brewster had a productive Fall Classic Day at Northlands Park on Saturday. Last year, they won three of the seven stakes races on the card. On Saturday, two of their horses came back to win, including Cool Ventura, who easily won the Alberta Breeders Handicap for older horses, the first of seven stakes races restricted to Alberta-breds. They also finished second with Cool Kahuna in the Alberta Premier's Futurity. All of the races were worth $50,000.

There's a Place wins Buffalo by DQ

A chain-reaction bumping incident heading into the final turn led to the disqualification of odds-on favorite Applicant in the $50,000 Buffalo Stakes at Assiniboia Downs on Saturday evening.

There's a Place, who was not involved in the skirmishing, inherited the win in the one-mile Buffalo after finishing nine lengths behind Applicant in second place.

There's a Place, who had won her maiden over five furlongs last time out, was making her stakes debut for trainer Marvin Buffalo and jockey Tyrone Nelson. She returned $5.70 as the second choice.

Judge Joan by a nose in Barretts Debutante

POMONA, Calif. - The maiden filly Judge Joan stepped up in class Saturday at Fairplex Park, where she outlasted runner-up Repo and even-money favorite Well Deserved to win the in a three-way blanket finish.

Aaron Gryder rode Judge Joan ($20.80) to the nose victory over Repo. Well Deserved finished a head back in third in the 6 1/2-furlong stakes for 2-year-old fillies who were offered for sale at a Barretts auction.

Regal Ransom wires Super Derby

BOSSIER CITY, La.- Regal Ransom is back. On Saturday he was a winner in his first start since the Kentucky Derby, when he cruised to an easy, front-running win in the at Louisiana Downs. Regal Ransom won by 1 1/4 lengths over Blame, while it was another 3 1/4 lengths back in third to Massone.

The Super Derby was one of six stakes worth a cumulative $1.2 million on the richest card of the meet at Louisiana Downs.

Classic Ramona refuses to lose

Classic Ramona led to upper stretch in the $73,600 Richmond at Hoosier Park on Saturday afternoon before being headed by Brean Can. Jockey Emanuel Cosme then asked Classic Ramona for her best, and she responded, drawing clear late to win the 1 1/16-mile event by a length.

Cloudy's Knight coasts in Kentucky Cup Turf

FRANKLIN, Ky. - Horses away from racing for a year or more are typically unlikely winners. But Saturday at Kentucky Downs, such layoffs were, surprisingly, the path to victory.

Cloudy's Knight, unraced since finishing eighth in the Grade 1 Northern Dancer on Sept. 7 of last year at Woodbine, returned a winner in the featured - following Danzon's triumph in the Kentucky Cup Ladies earlier on the Kentucky Downs card.

Trainer Stan Hough won the Grade 2 Matron with Awesome Maria (above) one race after he finished second in the Futurity with Discreetly Mine.

ELMONT, N.Y. - As confident as trainer Stanley Hough was that Discreetly Mine would run well in the Grade 2 Futurity for juvenile colts Saturday at Belmont Park, he was even more steadfast in his belief that his filly Awesome Maria would run a strong race in the for juvenile fillies.

One race after Discreetly Mine finished second to odds-on favorite D' Funnybone in the Futurity, Awesome Maria lived up to Hough's expectations by scoring a 2 3/4-length victory in the $250,000 Matron. Touching Beauty finished second, by a nose over Worship the Moon.
