Summer Bird, Quality Road work for Jockey Club

Quality Road, shown in the foreground of an August workout at Saratoga, will try and better his third-place finish in the Travers on Saturday when he is rematched with Summer Bird in the Jockey Club Gold Cup.

ELMONT, N.Y. - Travers first- and third-place finishers Summer Bird and Quality Road completed preparations for their rematch in next Saturday's $750,000 Jockey Club Gold Cup here by putting in five-furlong workouts Saturday morning over Belmont Park's main track.

Neither horse was asked for much by their riders in their final breezes as Summer Bird went five furlongs in 1:02.37, working by himself under regular rider Kent Desormeaux, while Quality Road, working in company with stablemate Denver, covered the same distance in 1:01.65 under regular jockey John Velazquez.

Jockey Alvarado injured at Hastings

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - Jockey Pedro Alvarado is out for the rest of the year after breaking both of his collarbones and a rib at Hastings on Friday night. He was injured when Bear Den, a horse he rode to a second-place finish in the sixth race, collapsed from an apparent heart attack while pulling up on the clubhouse turn after the race.

Going Ballistic, Jonesboro headed to Hawthorne

Going Ballistic wins the Governor's Cup at Remington Park in his last start, breaking a losing streak that dated back to November 2007.

Going Ballistic, who recaptured his best form earlier this month when he won the $150,000 Governor's Cup at Remington Park, is being pointed for the Grade 2, $500,000 Hawthorne Gold Cup on Saturday, said his trainer, Donnie Von Hemel.

The mile and a quarter handicap will be run at Hawthorne Race Course.

Run Louis Run takes Funkhouser

Run Louis Run, making her stakes debut in her sixth lifetime start, ran down pacesetter My Sister Margaret in deep stretch to prevail by a half-length in Friday night's $51,500 Ruth Funkhouser Memorial Stakes at Charles Town.

The seven-furlong Funkhouser,, restricted to West Virginia-bred 3-year-old fillies, served as the local prep for the $140,000 West Virginia Division of Tourism, a seven-furlong race that is part of the $2 million West Virginia Breeders Classic program on Oct. 17.

Hoosier cancels for second day

Hoosier Park canceled its last seven races on Friday afternoon's planned 10-race card because of unsafe track conditions as rainstorms continued to move through the Indianapolis area. Hoosier also canceled the last nine races of its scheduled 13-race Thursday night because of rain and track conditions.

Turf Paradise names new voice

Turf Paradise has named Mike Chamberlain its new announcer for its upcoming 54th meet, which opens Friday. Chamberlain replaces Frank Mirahmadi, who called the races last year after the death of Luke Kruytbosch. Mirahmadi resigned to take on an expanded role with the TVG Network.

"I first became aware of Michael's considerable talent when I lived in Texas, and I'm a big fan," said the track's president and general manager, Eugene Joyce. "We are excited to have him on board."

Calder gets NTRA safety nod

Calder Race Course in Miami has become the ninth track to be fully accredited under the National Thoroughbred Racing Association's Safety and Integrity Alliance program, the track and the NTRA announced jointly on Friday.
