Fincher keeps on rolling at Zia

Trainer Todd Fincher has won six of the last 10 Thoroughbred stakes run at Zia Park, and has a little more business to conduct before the season ends Dec. 8.

His streak began on Oct. 18, when Glory Be Mine defeated open company in the $60,000 Permian Basin. The following weekend, Fincher sent out Lydia's Last Step to upset the $60,000 Governor's Cup for 2-year-olds at 59-1. But that was just a glimpse of what was to come Nov. 8, when he won four of the seven Thoroughbred stakes run on the $2 million New Mexico Cup card at Zia.

Orientate Express an overachiever

Orientate Express is becoming a bit of a giant-killer in the Southwest. He has upset a pair of odds-on favorites in stakes in Oklahoma and New Mexico in his last two starts, and next month will get the biggest test of his career. Trainer Kelly Von Hemel said Orientate Express is being pointed for the $200,000 Distance Championship at Zia Park on Dec. 6.

Last weekend, the horse won the track's prep for the race, the $60,000 Veteran, taking down Song of Navarone, the 3-5 favorite off a series of competitive efforts in major stakes in Southern California.

However, after leaving Fair Grounds, Sok Sok went 0 for 5, with only one in-the-money finish. His last effort was a fourth-place finish in Premier Handicap at Zia Park on Sept. 13.
