Four years ago, Barbaro was rising to prominence in south Florida when he brought a supposed turf-slanted pedigree and outstanding turf form to the Triple Crown trail; he was by Dynaformer and had started his career with three straight turf victories.
AT LAST, THE MEET BEGINS
It took two months, but the winter meet that began Dec. 26 at Santa Anita finally came to life in a series of stakes Feb. 13 won by Caracortado, who leaped to the top of the 3-year-old division; Blind Luck, who won her comeback; and St Trinians, whose exciting win against females stamped her as a player in none other than the Santa Anita Handicap.
WHO'S HOT
Rajiv Maragh
A regular here for the first time this winter, Maragh has made the most of the opportunity, winning eight more races last week and doing so in bunches, posting a riding double Thursday and hat tricks on Sunday and Monday's Presidents Day cards. His most important victory of the week came Sunday aboard Qualia, trainer Bobby Ribaudo's exciting filly prospect, in a second-level allowance race.

SOUTHWEST SHUFFLE
Redrawing a race is like reshuffling a deck of cards. You never know what you're going to get the second time around. So even though the field for Saturday's rescheduled Grade 3, $250,000 Southwest was expected to remain intact when entries were taken for it again Thursday, several factors could change the complexion of the race. It starts with the draw, which might affect some of the runners in the one-mile stakes that will begin and end at the sixteenth pole at Oaklawn.
HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - Earlier this week, Gulfstream Park's racing secretary, Dan Bork, feared he might have to hustle just to get six starters for Saturday's $150,000 Hutcheson Stakes. But by the time entries closed early Wednesday afternoon there were eight names in the box, perhaps none more surprising than Wildcat Frankie.
Gio Ponti, a two-time Eclipse Award winner in 2009, will make his much anticipated 2010 debut, as expected, in Saturday's $150,000 Tampa Bay Breeders' Cup at Tampa Bay Downs. Trainer Christophe Clement is planning on using the race as a prep for the Dubai World Cup on March 27.
NEW ORLEANS - The plane from south Florida arrived Wednesday morning in New Orleans, and yes, two entrants for the Risen Star at Fair Grounds were on it.
The connections of both Drosselmeyer and Tempted to Tapit had left the door open to staying home for Saturday's Fountain of Youth Stakes, but both colts in the end shipped for the Risen Star.
