Michigan horsemen to help fund meet

Michigan's Thoroughbred horsemen's group has approved the transfer of more than $170,000 from its overnight purse pool to fund 29 days of racing at Pinnacle Race Course during the state government's 2009-10 fiscal year that ends Sept. 30.

In March, the Thoroughbred racing season was reduced to three days by the state Gaming and Control Board, which said it was uanble to fund regulators at the track due to budget constraints.

Daytona training again after tendon injury

ARCADIA, Calif. - Daytona, a top turf horse in California in 2007 and 2008, has rejoined trainer Dan Hendricks's stable at Santa Anita with the hope that the 6-year-old gelding can return to racing in the second half of the year.

Daytona has won 8 of 18 starts and $991,690. He has not started since finishing 10th to Goldikova in the 2008 Breeders' Cup Mile at Santa Anita. Last May, Daytona was diagnosed with a tear in a tendon, Hendricks said. At the time, Daytona was being prepared for a comeback after being given a break during the winter of 2008-09.

Keeneland invalidates past-post doubles

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Keeneland officials announced Saturday morning that past-posted tickets purchased Friday on the two-day daily double combining the Maker's Mark Mile and the Blue Grass Stakes have been invalidated by the track's totalisator provider, United Tote, and will-pays were adjusted accordingly.

Zenyatta wows them again at Oaklawn

Ridden by jockey Mike Smith, Zenyatta made her 16th win look easy, swooping from last to first to win the Grade 1 Apple Blossom.

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. - Zenyatta established herself as one of racing's all-time greats in November, when she became the first female to win the $5 million , thrilling the ontrack crowd of 44,973.

With the performance, Zenyatta also matched the feat of Citation, Cigar, and Mister Frisky of winning 16 consecutive races while competing at the top level of the sport.

"I have to say, I really believe she's even better this year," said Mike Smith, Zenyatta's regular rider.

Karelian beats Court Vision in Maker's Mark

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Karelian got a great forward trip under Julien Leparoux and had plenty in reserve to turn back a sustained run by favored Court Vision and avenge a bitter defeat in the on a sun-splashed Friday afternoon at Keeneland.

Court Vision beat Karelian by a nose in the lone Grade 1 turf race for older males at the 2009 Keeneland fall meet, the Shadwell Turf Mile. This time, however, Karelian proved clearly best, shaking clear on the lead passing the sixteenth pole after Court Vision had pulled almost even.

The Arlington Park stable area, which can accommodate 2,140 horses, opens Monday, with training on Arlington's 1 1/8-mile Polytrack surface scheduled to begin on Wednesday. Arlington's 91-day meet begins April 29 and runs through Sept. 26.

Belmont scraps its overnight stakes program

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - The New York Racing Association has eliminated its overnight stakes program for the upcoming Belmont Park spring/summer meet and will use that money - nearly $2.2 million - to increase purses for open-company races. Belmont's 59-day meet opens April 30.

Purses for open-company maiden and allowance races will go up by $10,000 from what they were worth at Aqueduct. The new purses reflect a $7,000 increase when compared to last year's Belmont spring/summer meet. Purses for claiming races will go up $5,000, and maiden claimers will go up by $3,000 from Aqueduct.

Double-digit fields proving elusive

ARCADIA, Calif. - Santa Anita will complete a five-day racing week on Sunday with none of the 42 races having as many as 10 runners.

A rash of small fields throughout the week is likely to keep the track from averaging eight runners per race for the winter-spring meeting, which ends next Sunday. But for the final five days of the meeting, starting Wednesday, the track's director of racing, Mike Harlow, expects the field size situation to brighten.
