Keeneland opener runs the gamut

LEXINGTON, Ky. - They say that character is best revealed under trying circumstances, which says a lot about the smile that trainer Larry Demeritte managed to put on his face in the aftermath of the first race of the Keeneland spring meet Friday.

Demeritte had just seen Weekend Wildcat, a 2-year-old colt he trains for Mervin and Barbara McNamara, come up on the short end of a nose photo. With 100 yards to go, Weekend Wildcat appeared to have gotten the best of Wetzel after the pair had hooked up in early stretch, but Wetzel battled back along the rail to prevail in a head-bob.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - Not every trainer handles adversity in the same manner. Some who are often quite gracious in victory can be equally as difficult to deal with following a defeat.

They all should take a lesson from Mary Hartmann.

Win or lose, first or last, sometimes it's hard to tell with the classy Hartmann.

Sadler looks for next plateau

Benoit & Associates
Sidney's Candy, winning the San Felipe, seeks his third straight win Saturday in the Santa Anita Derby.

John Sadler finally caught "The Hurt Locker" on video not long ago and took it very much to heart. Not the parts about disarming IEDs in a hostile Iraqi landscape or holding a bead on a distant sniper for hours on end beneath a withering desert sun. The job of a Thoroughbred trainer can be challenging, but it's rarely lethal.

No, what hit home with Sadler was a quiet scene with the protagonist soldier back home stateside, submitting to the mundane task of grocery shopping while feeling utterly lost and completely out of place.
