Plenty of familiar faces are back

AUBURN, Wash. - Most of the prominent players from the 2009 meeting will be front and center again Friday when Emerald Downs opens its 15th season of Thoroughbred racing.

Ricky Frazier, runaway winner of the 2009 riding title, is set to defend his crown after a winter campaign in Pennsylvania, where he primarily rode at Penn National. Tim McCanna begins the 89-day meeting with designs on his 10th Emerald training title. And Doris Harwood, whose horses earned an Emerald season record $931,916 last year, will attempt to top the trainer money list for the third consecutive season.

Turf or dirt option for Bold Chieftain

ALBANY, Calif. - Trainer Bill Morey Jr. got just the effort he needed from Bold Chieftain in his allowance victory over Monterey Jazz last Friday at Golden Gate Fields. The race should set up Bold Chieftain perfectly for the Grade 2 San Francisco Mile on April 24.

Bold Chieftain and jockey Russell Baze were content to sit farther off the pace than might be expected, just as they did in winning the Sunshine Millions Classic at Santa Anita on Jan. 30.

Zenyatta gets the royal treatment

Zenyatta steps off the plane on Tuesday, arriving at Oaklawn for the Apple Blossom.

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. - There were signs and wonders all around. On the highway here from the Little Rock airport, a roadside sign read, "Warning: Prepare to Meet God." Closer to town, you almost felt like you were on Cloud Nine, especially if you were at the Cloud Nine RV Park. And on Tuesday morning, the faithful flocked to the Hot Springs airport, and there descending from the heavens was a large jet, from which racing's goddess emerged moments after it landed.

Joanie's Catch still on target

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - It may not be the most well-traveled route to the Kentucky Oaks, using a seven-furlong statebred stakes at Tampa Bay Downs as a final prep, but that's the road trainer Barry Rose chose to take with his multiple graded stakes-placed Joanie's Catch to get her to the big dance for 3-year-old fillies on April 30 at Churchill Downs.

Evangeline opening with confidence to buck trends

OPELOUSAS, La. - Evangeline Downs will have a new post time when the 2010 season gets under way on Wednesday evening, but little else has changed from last season. It is easy to see why Evangeline is content to play a pat hand.

Although the industry-wide slump pervaded in 2009, the declines at Evangeline were minimal compared with those of many racing centers across the nation. Buoyed by slots-infused purses and an ample supply of horses, Evangeline officials are optimistic heading into the 2010 stand.

Fantasy one-two finishers headed to Ky. Oaks

Blind Luck and Tidal Pool, who finished one-two in the Grade 2, $300,000 Fantasy here last Friday, are both headed next to the Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs on April 30. Blind Luck flew back to her California base on Monday. She dominated her rivals, winning by 2 1/2 lengths and earning a career-best Beyer Figure of 104.

"She came out of the race real nice," said Jerry Hollendorfer, who co-owns and trains Blind Luck.

Tiz the One out of Arkansas Derby

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. - Tiz the One did not join Super Saver and Pulsion aboard a Monday flight to Oaklawn for the Grade 1, $1 million Arkansas Derby after failing to come out of his final work for the race to the satisfaction of his connections. With his defection, the field size stood at six as of Monday, with two others possible for the 1 1/8-mile race that closes out the meet Saturday.

Informed Decision returns in Vinery Madison

Informed Decision, winner of the 2009 Eclipse Award for top female sprinter, will make her seasonal debut Thursday at Keeneland in the Grade 1, $300,000 Vinery Madison Stakes, a seven-furlong race she won last year at 4.

Informed Decision, who has not raced since winning the Nov. 6 Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint, will have Julien Leparoux aboard when she breaks from the outside post in a field of six fillies and mares. Witty, undefeated in four starts, and Dubai Majesty, an earner of more than $550,000, look like the top challengers.
