Ostrich, camel races at Lincoln

Racing action takes a slightly different turn at Lincoln Race Course on Saturday afternoon, with the $20,000 Lincoln Breeders' Special sharing the headlines with a pair of exhibition races. Camel and ostrich races make their return for a third straight year, with members of the jockey colony expected to pilot the birds of a different feather and their long-legged counterparts. The previous two years have drawn a good-sized crowd. In Thoroughbred action, Bach's Homebrew is expected to make his return in the Breeders' Special for 3-year-old Nebraska-breds going one mile.

Zenyatta aimed at Hirsch three-peat

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Zenyatta's appearance in the $250,000 Vanity Handicap at Hollywood Park on Sunday is likely to be the first of two races for the popular 6-year-old mare in Southern California this summer.

Wednesday, trainer John Shirreffs said the $300,000 Clement Hirsch Stakes at Del Mar on Aug. 7, a race that Zenyatta won in 2008 and 2009, will be a late summer goal. Races on the East Coast had entered the discussions, but Shirreffs and owners Jerry and Ann Moss intend to leave her in Southern California for now.

Allen happy at Canterbury

Paul Allen is in his 16th season as the announcer at Canterbury Park, and he says he isn't going anywhere.

Allen, a 44-year-old who lives in the Minneapolis suburb of Eden Prairie, has started a family and built a career in the Twin Cities.

Aside from working at Canterbury, he is the play-by-play man for the Minnesota Vikings Radio Network, and has his own radio program, "The Paul Allen Show," on KFAN-AM Sports Radio.

"I would not be a football play-by-play guy had I not started in horse racing," Allen said.

Princess Christine notches seventh win of 2010

Princess Christine ($3) won her fifth straight race Tuesday, taking a $16,000 optional claiming sprint at River Downs by 2 3/4 lengths. It is the seventh time the 5-year-old mare has won this year, placing her in a tie for second in most wins in the country with Head to Toe, like Princess Christine an Ohio-bred. World Gone Wrong is tops with eight victories.

Trainer Joe Woodard attributes her winning ways to two things, and the first is placing her in the right kind of race.

Former claimer Mandurah sets world record

So Grant Forster, how does it feel to train the world's fastest turf miler?

"I guess it feels a little different than it did last week," Forster said while chuckling at the thought.

Mandurah became the new record holder with a 1:31.23 mile on Sunday at Monmouth. Mister Light set the old mark of 1:31.41 on Jan. 3, 2005, at Gulfstream.

The record was as stunning as it was improbable, coming in Mandurah's grass debut. Not bad for a 6-year-old gelding running for a $7,500 tag earlier this year at Oaklawn Park.

Soaring Empire was clocked in 59.40 seconds in his June 3 work, the fastest of the 31 works at five furlongs that morning at Monmouth.

Flashback for Salty Wave

Salty Wave, who ran in the Grade 1 Spinaway at Saratoga back in 2007, set a course record at Lone Star last Saturday. She covered five furlongs on turf in 55.09 seconds when she won an optional $35,000 claimer by 2 1/2 lengths. It was the third straight win for Salty Wave, a $20,000 claim in April whose current win streak has come in turf sprints at Lone Star.

"She's going through a good spell right now," said Karl Broberg, who trains Salty Wave. "If you look at her entire career, she's shown speed and ability and won a stakes earlier on."
