Koala Beach holds off Posse Power at Emerald

AUBURN, Wash. - Front-running Koala Beach outlasted 3-5 favorite Posse Power and Newfound Man in a three-horse blanket finish to win the $50,000 Pepsi Cola Handicap for 3-year-olds Sunday at Emerald Downs.

Ridden by Ricky Frazier for trainer Doris Harwood, Koala Beach ($11.40) prevailed by a nose over Posse Power, with Newfound Man a neck back in third. The winner ran one mile in 1:34.20, the fastest time by a 3-year-old in track history.

Gains in average at Stockton meet

The five-day San Joaquin County Fair meet in Stockton, Calif., showed substantial gains in average all-sources and average ontrack betting on its live races at its meet compared with last year's 11-day meet. The San Joaquin County Fair meet, the first of California's fair meetings, ran from June 16-20.

Desert Party aimed at Forego

ELMONT, N.Y. - Desert Party came out of his 3 1/2-length victory in Saturday s $200,000 Don LeVine Memorial at Philadelphia Park in good order, said Rick Mettee, the New York-based assistant for Godolphin, which owns Desert Party. Mettee added the 4-year-old colt will likely be pointed to the Grade 1 Forego at Saratoga on Sept. 4.

In the LeVine, Desert Party came from last position, though he was never too far back, to win while running seven furlongs in 1:22.04 and earning a career-best Beyer Speed Figure of 101 in the process.

Regal Ransom starting year in Suburban

ELMONT, N.Y. - With Desert Party having made a successful return to the races last Saturday at Philadelphia Park, the connections of Godolphin Stable will hope for a similar result this Saturday when stablemate Regal Ransom makes his first start of 2010 in the Grade 2, $300,000 Suburban Handicap at Belmont Park.

Regal Ransom, who at 3 won the UAE Derby, defeating Desert Party, in Dubai and the Super Derby in Louisiana, has not run since finishing eighth behind Zenyatta in the Breeders' Cup Classic last Nov. 7 at Santa Anita.

Lookin At Lucky healthy again

Lookin At Lucky is expected to resume training this week in preparation for a start in the Haskell on Aug. 1 at Monmouth Park.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Lookin At Lucky, the champion 2-year-old male of 2009 and winner of the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico on May 15, missed a week of training because of illness after a half-mile workout on June 20.

Trainer Bob Baffert does not consider the illness to be a long-term problem and said that Lookin At Lucky will resume training this week for an expected start in the $1 million Haskell Invitational at Monmouth Park on Aug. 1.

Injury keeps Artic Fern from Plate

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Artic Fern, who had been one of the leading candidates for Sunday's $1 million Queen's Plate, will not make the race after his trainer reported that the horse emerged from his recent workout with a possible shoulder injury.

Artic Fern would have been starting in a stakes for first time in the Queen's Plate, but the colt was highly regarded because of recent back-to-back allowance victories at 1 1/16 miles.

Artic Fern breezed five furlongs in 1:00.40 on the training track here last Saturday.

Weight helps Grand Adventure

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Grand Adventure certified his credentials as a top-notch turf runner here Sunday, registering his second stakes win in as many starts at the meeting in the $307,100 King Edward Stakes.

The Grade 2 King Edward, for 3-year-olds and up, was run over one mile of turf after being contested at 1 1/8 miles in recent seasons.

Golden Gate handle declines

Golden Gate Fields showed a 12 percent decrease in daily live ontrack handle for its 105-day 2009-10 race meeting. Live ontrack handle was $193,468 per day this year compared with $219,839 for the 114-day 2008-09 meet.

The all-sources handle declined 11.3 percent from a $4,378,851 daily average in 2008-09 to $3,885,374 in 2009-10 as simulcast wagering fell 7.4 percent (from $1,093,540 to $1,012,807) and out-of-state wagering fell 7.5 percent (from $1,419,498 to $1,312,589).

The Golden Gate meet began on Dec. 26, 2009 and ended June 12, 2010.

Zenyatta breezes half-mile at Hollywood

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Zenyatta, the two-time champion and undefeated winner of 17 races, breezed a half-mile in 49.60 seconds at Hollywood Park on Sunday, her first workout since the Grade 1 Vanity Handicap here June 13.

But trainer John Shirreffs is still not ready to commit the popular 6-year-old mare to her next race. On Sunday, Shirreffs stopped short of committing Zenyatta to the $300,000 Clement Hirsch Stakes over 1 1/16 miles at Del Mar on Aug. 7, a race that could feature a rematch between Zenyatta and St Trinians who were separated by a half-length in the Vanity.
