Entries seem sufficient for future

The decision to cancel Wednesday's racing because of insufficient entries is seen by racing secretary Martin Panza as an isolated incident, and unlikely to occur again through the remainder of the spring-summer meeting, which runs until July 18.

"Anything is possible, but I wouldn't think so," he said of the possibility of future cancellations. "At some point, some of these stables that haven't started any 2-year-olds, they'll have to run."

Gallant Son earns shot at Shoemaker Mile

INGLEWOOD, Calif. -Watching Gallant Son rally from fifth to win his first graded stakes in the Grade 3 Inglewood Handicap at Hollywood Park made a believer of the colt's trainer, Frank Lucarelli.

In the early months of the year, Lucarelli wanted to test Gallant Son in an important turf race. The win by 1 3/4 lengths proved that Gallant Son fits in big grass races such as Monday's $250,000 Shoemaker Mile.

"Months ago, I wasn't sure he belongs in a Grade 1 turf race," he said on Friday.

Hot Dixie Chick taking on elders

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Hot Dixie Chick will be facing older fillies and mares for the first time when she starts Monday in the Grade 3, $100,000 Winning Colors Stakes at Churchill Downs.

The 3-year-old Hot Dixie Chick was one of the most precocious fillies in her class, winning the Grade 3 Schuylerville and Grade 1 Spinaway last summer at Saratoga. But her connections declined to run her over the synthetic surface at Santa Anita last fall in the Breeders' Cup, and more than six months had elapsed when she returned to win the Prima Donna Stakes in March at Oaklawn Park easily.

Pincelada's pedigree favors turf

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Pincelada is fast, and she finishes. Can she run on grass?

Trainer Jorge Periban has little doubt that Pincelada will handle a surface change Sunday at Hollywood Park in the six-furlong, $60,000 Manhattan Beach Stakes. A turf sprint for 3-year-old fillies, the Manhattan Beach will test her trainer's pedigree research.

"I'm moving to the turf because she has a pedigree for grass. Her momma won four races on grass," Periban said, referring to Flo's Z Fury, who won 4 of 15 on turf, including a stakes.

Terraciano appealing fine, ban

Trainer Neil Terraciano has appealed a 60-day suspension and a $1,000 fine handed him by the New York stewards after a horse who ran under his name had a higher than acceptable level of carbon dioxide in his blood, something usually associated with the administering of milkshakes. A milkshake is a mixture of bicarbonate of soda, sugar, and electrolytes, a combination thought to relieve fatigue.

The horse, Martha's Mandate, finished last in the first race on May 16 at Belmont Park.
