Tampa Bay Downs: Trainer race a hot one

OLDSMAR, Fla. – April in Oldsmar usually has the racing community thinking about travel plans. Horse vans on the backstretch increase in numbers. Grooms, exercise boys, and assistant trainers are packing tack and arranging housing for their summer headquarters, and the racing program slows a bit. Some of the fields are smaller, and stables that have been quiet most of the meeting start to win a race or two as the competition gets a bit easier.

Churchill Downs: Edgewood looks wide open with big field, no standout

Like so many races this weekend at Churchill Downs, the $100,000 Edgewood Stakes offers just what horseplayers are always asking for: a big field of classy horses, with no clear-cut favorite and plenty of attractive wagering options.

In fact, it looks like you could go choose from most anything in this field of 10 3-year-old turf fillies and not be too far wrong. Only two Edgewood starters have double-digit morning-line odds, which says plenty in itself, while the program favorite, Smart Sting, is pegged at 4-1, a very high number for a field of this size.

Emerald Downs: Gdanz Xpress likely to be favored in return

AUBURN, Wash. – Praise a Native, an impressive winner on opening night, and Gdanz Xpress, stakes-placed twice in 2010, headline Friday’s feature race at Emerald Downs.

A $25,000 claimer for 3-year-olds who have never won two races, the 5 1/2-furlong feature attracted five entrants. Gdanz Xpress, making his first start in eight months, will break from the inside post position. Praise a Native, who posted a field-best Beyer Speed Figure in his victory April 15, will break from the outside. In between are Carr Creek, Landed On the Moon, and Topper’s Trooper.
