Hollywood Park: California Flag ready for his comeback

Barbara D. Livingston
California Flag got a four-month freshening after tailing off in the fall of 2010.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. – One year older and one shade whiter, gray veteran California Flag will try to prove he is not one step slower when he returns from an eight-month layoff Sunday in the $77,000 Robert K. Kerlan Memorial Handicap at Hollywood Park.

At six furlongs on turf, the Kerlan once would have been a cakewalk for California Flag, whose wicked speed propelled him to six stakes victories including the 2009 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint and a 9-for-21 career in which he earned more than $1.1 million.

Boys At Tosconova has not raced since finishing second to Uncle Mo in last year’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at Churchill Downs. Boys At Tosconova was gearing up for a 3-year-old debut in January at Gulfstream Park when Dutrow stopped on him because he didn’t think the horse was moving properly.

ELMONT, N.Y. – The California-based filly Alienation, who ran second in a pair of graded stakes last summer at Saratoga, returns to New York a bigger, stronger filly, according to trainer Bob Baffert. But one thing remains the same: She wants to run as fast as she can for as long as she can.

On Monday, Alienation will try to outsprint five opponents and become a Grade 1 winner in the $250,000 Prioress Stakes, the feature event on a 10-race Fourth of July program at Belmont Park. First post is 1 p.m.
