Clement Rock, with Luis Contreras riding, wins the Toronto Cup.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Clement Rock didn't win like a 3-5 shot should, but he did get the job done under Luis Contreras in the $156,000 Toronto Cup Stakes at Woodbine on Saturday.

Joes Blazing Aaron set a slow pace while being pressed by Celtic Conviction in the route for 3-year-olds, which was run over about nine furlongs on a very firm turf course.

Jockey John Grabowski gives Socialsaul a pat after winning the New York Derby at Finger Lakes.

Socialsaul led a one-two finish for trainer Gary Contessa in Saturday's $150,000 New York Derby for New York-bred 3-year-olds at Finger Lakes.

In the process of scoring by 4 1/4 lengths, Socialsaul ($5.60) foiled his stablemate Preachintothedevil's chances of earning a $100,000 bonus for sweeping all three legs of the Big Apple Triple. Preachintothedevil had won the seven-furlong Mike Lee at Belmont Park on June 26. The series concludes with the Albany Stakes at Saratoga on Aug. 24.

Del Mar: Mr. Commons the Oceanside favorite

For the third consecutive year, the $100,000 Oceanside Stakes at Del Mar will have one division on Wednesday’s opening day of the 37-day meeting.

Mr. Commons, third in Santa Anita Derby and eighth in the Preakness Stakes on May 21, will be favored. The one-mile turf race drew 14 but will be limited to 10 starters.

The race was divided into two divisions annually from 1989 to 2008, and into three divisions in 2007. There were 26 nominations for this year’s race, but the race did not draw sufficient entries for two divisions.

Del Mar: Cassidy ready for opening week stakes

Barbara D. Livingston
The usual Q.T. is being freshened on a farm and will miss the Del Mar meet.

Dr. Green may be a little more focused on racing when he starts in Wednesday’s $100,000 Oceanside Stakes on opening day at Del Mar.

“I castrated him since his last race and he’s trained well,” trainer Jim Cassidy said on Saturday.

It was a drastic move, but one that Cassidy hopes will give his stable a boost on the opening week of the Del Mar meeting. He also plans to start Oceanside nominee Robbie’s War in an allowance race on turf and Kid Edward in Saturday’s $300,000 Eddie Read Stakes, a Grade 1 over 1 1/8 miles on turf.
