Del Mar: Blind Luck's next still not set

Barbara D. Livingston
Blind Luck is still under consideration for a start against males in the Pacific Classic.

DEL MAR, Calif. - Blind Luck worked six furlongs in 1:13.40 at Del Mar on Wednesday, but trainer Jerry Hollendorfer said he has to finalize plans about where the champion 3-year-old filly will start on Aug. 28.

The options are the $300,000 Personal Ensign Stakes for fillies and mares at Saratoga or the $1 million Pacific Classic against males at Del Mar. Both races are over 1 1/4 miles. Blind Luck has never run against males.

“There are pros and cons to either race,” Hollendorfer said. “This is not an easy race here.”

Saratoga: Spa Babies for Aug. 11, Race 9

Welcome to Spa Babies! I'll break down the statistics for every juvenile contest at the meet and hope for a tidy profit.

In past years, I would list the stats for each horse before writing up my analysis, selections and wagering strategy. In order to streamline the content, this year's Spa Babies will showcase written analyses of each juvenile race. Each analysis will include relevant statistical information. Following the analysis, top three selections and wagering strategy will be provided.

Saratoga: Zagora may go to Woodbine for Canadian

Zagora, who gave trainer Chad Brown his first Grade 1 win when she took the Diana here on July 30, could make her next start in the Grade 2, $300,000 Canadian at Woodbine on Sept. 18.

Brown had previously mentioned the Spinster at Keeneland in October as a potential spot for Zagora. Brown said he is leaning toward the Canadian as a possible prep for the $1 million E.P. Taylor at Woodbine on Oct. 16.

Brown said Zagora’s schedule could depend on what Stacelita does this weekend in the Beverly D at Arlington.

Saratoga: Emerald Beech takes Waya Stakes

Barbara D. Livingston
Emerald Beech, under Alex Solis, prevails in the Waya Stakes.

Emerald Beech, under a patient, rail-skimming ride from Alex Solis, struck the front at the three-sixteenths pole, and was able to outfinish a late-running Senada to win Wednesday’s $75,000 Signature Stallion Waya Stakes by a neck. It was 1 1/2 lengths back to Dyani in third.

Emerald Beech, a 5-year-old daughter of Maria’s Mon, won for the third consecutive time for trainer Jonathan Sheppard and George Strawbridge’s Augustin Stables.

Saratoga: J.C.'s Pride targets Hopeful

J.C.’s Pride, who set a track record when winning a maiden race by 3 1/4 lengths here at Saratoga on July 27, will make his next start in the Grade  1 Hopeful on Sept. 5, trainer Robert Barbara confirmed Wednesday.

J.C.s’ Pride ran 5 1/2 furlongs in 56.54 seconds and earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 101 for his maiden win. That race came after he finished second to Overdriven in his debut at Belmont Park. Overdriven came back to win the Sanford Stakes here on July 24.

Emerald Downs: Owners looking for second-generation Washington Oaks

AUBURN, Wash. – Like mother, like daughter? The people responsible for the breeding and care of Class Included are hoping for something along those lines when their star 3-year-old filly starts as one of the favorites in the $65,000 Washington Oaks on Saturday at Emerald Downs.

Arlington: Block formidable with five runners in two Illinois Owners stakes

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. – No trainer has more powerful Illinois owners than Chris Block, a fact prominently displayed in a pair of $60,000 stakes restricted to Illinois-owned horses on Friday at Arlington Park.

In the male division of the Illinois Owners, Block has two of the 10 entries, Hoodwinked and Ioya Bigtime, but it’s on the female side that Block holds the strongest hand. There, Block has three of the nine entrants in the 1 1/16-mile grass race, including likely favorites Askbut I Won’ttell and Peyote Patty.

Saratoga: Teaks North seeks third Grade 1 of 2011 in Sword Dancer

Teaks North improves to 3 for 3 on Monmouth Park's turf course by taking the Grade 3 Monmouth.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Teaks North will be in search of his third Grade 1 victory of the year as well as a little respect when he takes on seven horses in Saturday’s Grade 1, $500,000 Sword Dancer Invitational at Saratoga.

Teaks North has Grade 1 victories in the Gulfstream Park Turf Handicap in February and the United Nations last month at Monmouth Park. He also owns a victory in the Grade 3 Monmouth Stakes. Still, you hardly hear his name mentioned among the elite of the male turf division.

Arlington Park: Wigmore Hall's jockey Turner no stranger to trail-blazing

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. – When Hayley Turner goes to post aboard Wigmore Hall on Saturday, she will become just the third female rider to participate in the Arlington Million, but Turner has blazed wilder trails overseas. She is the first female rider to break into racing’s upper crust in Europe, and her trans-Atlantic trip to ride a horse in a Grade 1 race basically is unprecedented.

“She’s ridden plenty of good horses in big races,” said Michael Bell, Wigmore Hall’s trainer. “The fact that I’m using her says what I think about her as a rider.”
