Northlands Park: Canadian Derby looks like a scramble

Jason Teague, racing secretary at Northlands Park, is expecting a field of nine or possibly 10 horses to run in next Saturday’s Grade 3, $300,000 Canadian Derby. The 1 3/8-mile feature closed on Wednesday with 13 horses nominated.

“It looks like the most evenly matched field we have had here in years,” said Teague.

There are no standouts among the likely starters and it is hard to predict which horse will end up being the favorite.

Los Alamitos: Significant Cartel looks to breeze into Golden State Derby finals

Judging from his recent form, Significant Cartel may not need his best effort to win Sunday’s eighth race at Los Alamitos, the second of three divisions of the Golden State Derby trials.

Significant Cartel has won his last three starts, and will be favored to make it four on Sunday. Trainer Juan Aleman is hoping that jockey Eduardo Nicasio will have enough of a margin in the last 100 yards that the rider will not have to urge his mount.
