Saratoga: Hurricane no concern for Mambo Meister

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Dealing with the effects of a hurricane might be a new experience for the majority of trainers and horses stabled at Saratoga this summer, but not for Phil Gleaves or his handicap star Mambo Meister who have weathered their share of tropical storms and hurricanes while stabled regularly at Calder Race Course in south Florida over the past several summers.

Saratoga: Daveron likely to have one more race

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Daveron, an impressive winner of the Grade 2 Ballston Spa Stakes here Saturday, will likely have one more race before she is retired, owner Barry Irwin of Team Valor International indicated in a press release.

Daveron, a filly who benefits from time between races, would likely make that start in the Grade 1, $350,000 First Lady going a mile at Keeneland on Oct. 8 or the Grade 1, $250,000 Yellow Ribbon at Santa Anita going 1 1/4 miles Oct. 1.

Trainer Graham Motion said Monday that the First Lady might be the more logical of those two spots.

Saratoga: Caleb’s Posse ships out ahead of storm

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Caleb’s Posse, who nipped Uncle Mo right at the wire to add the Grade 1 King’s Bishop to his easy victory earlier this summer in the Grade 2 Amsterdam, wasted little time getting out of town. Trainer Donnie Von Hemel put his 3-year-old sprint star on a van to Arlington Park at 4 a.m. Sunday morning, getting on the road before the brunt of Hurricane Irene passed through the area later that day.

Hastings: P. S. Touch Down taking big drop

VANCOUVER, British Columbia – P. S. Touch Down will appreciate the considerably easier company she will be facing when she drops into a first-level allowance race that will serves as Wednesday’s feature at Hastings. Emerald Downs: Chu and I proves uncatchable in WTBOA Lads

AUBURN, Wash. – The speedy Chu and I, making his first start at a route distance, went directly to the front and led past every pole to win the $39,600 WTBOA Lads Stakes on Saturday at Emerald Downs.

With his third victory in four starts, Chu and I inched closer to honors as Emerald’s top 2-year-old, with the season-ending Gottstein Futurity on Sept. 25 the only remaining stakes event on the calendar. The You and I gelding, a homebred for Mike and Amy Feuerborn of Maple Valley, Wash., earned $21,780, increasing his bankroll to $50,539.

Emerald Downs's juvenile filly division upended by Sweet Saga's win in Shinpoch

AUBURN, Wash. – Sweet Saga raced to an upset victory in the $45,000 Barbara Shinpoch Stakes on Sunday at Emerald Downs, moving from the maiden ranks to the head of the 2-year-old filly division in less than 97 seconds. Leaving five rivals in her wake following a powerful rally through the turn and stretch, Sweet Saga ran one mile in 1:36.97 and paid $21.

Del Mar: Acclamation unlikely to try dirt

DEL MAR, Calif. – Six months later than intended, there may be a big race at Churchill Downs for The Factor.

Derailed from a potential start in the Kentucky Derby because of a hairline fracture of a hind ankle, The Factor returned from a four-month layoff to win Sunday’s Grade 1 Pat O’Brien Stakes for sprinters at Del Mar. The win left co-owner George Bolton hopeful that The Factor can start in a Breeders’ Cup race at Churchill Downs in November – the Sprint over six furlongs or the Dirt Mile, run around one turn.

Pacific Classic day handle down

DEL MAR, Calif. – Ontrack attendance soared, but all-sources handle was down to its lowest level in more than a decade on Sunday’s Pacific Classic program at Del Mar compared with the corresponding day in 2010.

Sunday’s ontrack attendance was 29,267, a gain of 23 percent from the 23,678 who attended the 2010 Pacific Classic, which was run on a Saturday. This year’s attendance figure was boosted to some extent by a sports-bag giveaway.

Del Mar: Big pick-six carryover, large fields await horseplayers
