Kentucky Downs: A racetrack, plain and simple

kentuckydowns.com
A vast field behind Kentucky Downs’s main building is part of what gives the track its unique feel.

It’s a long way from Kentucky Downs to pretty much anywhere else in racing. That’s okay with Ken Ramsey, who has come an even longer way from his rural Kentucky roots to make it big in the game.

Woodbine: La Prevoyante distance the challenge for Weekend Romance

Michael Burns
Heavy favorite Weekend Romance carries her speed to capture the Passing Mood.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Weekend Romance should be heavily favored Saturday at Woodbine in the $125,000 La Prevoyante Stakes, and her main obstacle in the turf route for Ontario-sired 3-year-old fillies might be the one-mile distance.

Weekend Romance is unbeaten in three 2011 outings, all in Ontario-sired company. She earned a Beyer Figure in the low 80s on each occasion. In her June 12 season opener, she won a six-furlong allowance on Polytrack by 6 1/2 lengths. She romped again after coming from just off the pace June 30 in her turf debut in a seven-furlong allowance.

Northlands: Distance is Fintan's friend in Marathon series

Fintan paid $28.70 when he won in his first attempt at a marathon distance, going 1 3/8 miles in the first leg of the Northlands Park Marathon Series Aug. 20. He figures to be a much shorter price when he stretches out to 1 5/8 miles in the second leg of the series Saturday.

The $7,500 starter handicap for 3-year-olds and up drew 10 horses, and Fintan is clearly the one to beat off his impressive performance.

Fugitive Angel, whose four straight wins include last month's Pin Oak Valley at Keeneland, is a prime contender in Saturday's Mrs. Revere.

Trainers Carol Levine and Craig Miller were clever enough to enter horses with good dirt form but no turf success in the two richest races on the Pennsylvania Day at the Races program Saturday at Parx Racing.

All 12 races on a card worth a collective $690,000 are restricted to Pennsylvania-breds. In addition to three maiden special weight events worth $45,000 apiece, there are three allowances that carry a purse of $47,000 and four stakes worth a combined $350,000.
