BOSSIER CITY, La.- Trainer Bob Baffert said on Sunday morning that Prayer for Relief has put himself in position for a start in the Breeders’ Cup Classic after winning his third consecutive graded stakes in the Super Derby on Saturday. The horse wired the field in the Grade 2, $500,000 race at Louisiana Downs, and earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 98. The number equaled the career-best figure he had put up one start earlier in the Grade 2 West Virginia Derby.
Apprentice rider Aparna Battula, 24, is expected to miss six to eight weeks after sustaining a compression fracture in her back in a spill during Friday’s fourth race at Laurel Park.
Battula was injured when her mount, Just Once, clipped heels with Basketball Belle near the quarter pole and the jockey was thrown to the ground.
ELMONT, N.Y. - On the day Belmont Park was to host the 36th running of the Ashley T. Cole Handicap, a two-time winner of the race was retired.
The 8-year-old Banrock, who won the Cole in 2008-09, will not run again, trainer Tom Bush confirmed Sunday. Banrock was diagnosed with an unspecified viral disease. He spent about two weeks at the Mid Atlantic Equine Medical Center in Ringoes, N.J., before returning to Bush’s Belmont Park barn earlier in the week.
