OCEANPORT, N.J. - Voodoo Charm emerged as a rising star in the statebred ranks with a rousing victory in the $60,000 New Jersey Breeders’ Handicap on Saturday at Monmouth Park.

The NJ Breeders was one of three stakes on New Jersey Thoroughbred Festival Day, a 12-race card exclusively for statebreds.

Voodoo Charm, a 3-year-old colt and the least experienced runner in the field, rallied strongly in the lane to beat Arctic Air by three-quarters of a length with Chris DeCarlo aboard.

Woodbine: Finale gives Pletcher a repeat in Summer Stakes

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Finale punched his ticket to the Nov. 5 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf at Churchill Downs with a workmanlike score Saturday at Woodbine in the $254,000 Summer Stakes, a one-mile BC Win and You’re In event.

Finale ($3.70) pressed a slow pace on the outside under John Velazquez and then duked it out with the front-running Excaper in the stretch en route to three-quarter-length triumph over that one. Daddy Nose Best rallied strongly to nail Maritimer on the wire for third in the eight-horse field.

Parx Racing: Stormy Lord rallies for upset in President’s Cup

Canadian invader Stormy Lord pulled a 9-1 upset Saturday when rallying from just off the pace to win the $250,000 President’s Cup at Parx Racing in suburban Philadelphia.

Ridden by Justin Stein for trainer Ian Black, Stormy Lord edged clear late to win the 1 1/8-mile turf race by 1 1/4 lengths over Citrus Kid, the 5-1 third choice. Lubash, a 54-1 shot, led most of the way when finishing a neck back in third, with Bim Bam finishing fourth.

Kentucky Downs: Ward wins 1,000th race with Cozy Kitten in Franklin-Simpson Mile

Trainer Wesley Ward hit the 1,000-win milestone Saturday by sending out Cozy Kitten to capture the $50,000 Franklin-Simpson Mile at Kentucky Downs in Franklin, Ky.

Ridden by Julio Garcia, Cozy Kitten prevailed by three-quarters of a length for his first stakes win and just his second overall in eight career starts. Cozy Kitten, bred and owned by Ken and Sarah Ramsey, is a 3-year-old who was facing older rivals.

Northlands Park, horsemen agree to cancel final three Sundays at meet

Following a joint request from management at Northlands Park and the Horsemen’s Benevolent Protective Association, Horse Racing Alberta canceled the final three Sundays at the current Northlands meet that concludes Oct. 10. Horse Racing Alberta is the administrative body that manages horse racing in Alberta. The days lost are Sept. 25 and Oct. 2 and 9.

According to Mat Monaco, executive director of the HBPA, a shortage of horses was the reason for the lost days.

Belmont Park: Stronach buys majority stake in Fire On Ice

Frank Stronach has acquired a majority interest in the 2-year-old colt Fire On Ice, who won his debut by 10 3/4 lengths at Saratoga.

Frank Stronach has purchased majority interest in the 2-year-old colt Fire On Ice, an impressive 10 3/4-length debut winner at Saratoga on Aug. 27. Fire On Ice is being pointed to the Grade 1 Champagne at Belmont Park on Oct. 8.

The horse will remain with trainer John Kimmel, who owned the horse in partnership with Eli Gindi. Kimmel said both he and Gindi will retain part interest in the colt, who will stand at Stronach’s Adena Springs when his racing career is over.

Tuesday’s featured third race at Hoosier Park is an entry-level allowance for 2-year-olds also open to $50,000 claimers and restricted to fillies, but there are parallels to the Futurity.
