Fair Grounds: Willcox Inn attracts investors

NEW ORLEANS – A half-share of Willcox Inn, one of the top 3-year-old grass horses of 2011, has been purchased by the Lael Stables of Roy and Gretchen Jackson, Willcox Inn’s trainer, Mike Stidham, said this week at Fair Grounds.

Willcox Inn, stabled recently at Keeneland, has been shipped to California, where he should be a major contender Sunday in the Grade 1 Hollywood Derby.

Churchill Downs: Kentucky Jockey Club, Golden Rod draw 11-horse fields

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Kentucky Jockey Club and Golden Rod, the twin 2-year-old stakes that help wind down the Churchill Downs fall meet, long have mirrored each other in grade, purse, and distance. For the Saturday renewals, they also match in field size and competitiveness.

Eleven well-matched 2-year-olds – colts and geldings in the KJC, and fillies in the Golden Rod – will go postward when the Grade 2, $150,000 races are run at 1 1/16 miles as the anchors on the second Stars of Tomorrow card of the 21-day fall meet. All 12 Saturday races are for 2-year-olds.

Woodbine: Laurin enjoying his modest success

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Trainer Roger Laurin can look back on a rich history in the racing game.

The son of Lucien Laurin, of Secretariat fame, Roger Laurin was highly successful in his own right with his numerous major stakes winners, including 2-year-old champion Chief's Crown, winner of the very first Breeders' Cup race in 1984; Numbered Account, the Eclipse Award-winning filly in 1971; and Drumtop, who won the Canadian International here in 1970.

Woodbine: Bear and Rod shows potential

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Bear and Rod, an Ontario-sired 2-year-old, should be strongly backed in the eighth race at Woodbine Friday, a six-furlong first-level allowance.

Bear and Rod garnered some action at 6-1 when he debuted in a 5 1/2-furlong maiden special for Ontario-sired stock Oct. 16. He vied for the lead and looked the part of a winner, only to get nailed on the wire.

Delta Downs: Decisive Moment getting break after Delta Mile win

VINTON, La. – Decisive Moment, a Kentucky Derby starter in May who ran the best race of his career last Saturday when he defeated Southern California shippers Hoorayforhollywood and Matto Mondo in the $125,000 Delta Mile at Delta Downs, is being freshened, trainer Juan Arias said. He’ll be vacationing in Ocala, Fla.

“We’re going to take him to the farm and give him a couple of weeks off,” Arias said.
