Calder: Winchester, Musketier look to bounce back in McKnight Handicap

Tom Keyser
Winchester will aim to put a last-place finish in the Joe Hirsch Turf Classic behind him when he starts as one of the favorites in Saturday’s Grade 2 McKnight Handicap.

MIAMI – Winchester and Musketier have a lot in common. The two veterans are long-winded turf specialists, and both are coming off atypically disappointing efforts over yielding courses in their most recent starts. The pair will cross paths Saturday at Calder, separated by just a single pound, when going postward as the co-choices in the $150,000 W.L. McKnight Handicap.

The 1 1/2-mile McKnight, the only Grade 2 race on the Tropical at Calder stakes schedule, highlights the final Saturday card of the 2011 Calder season that also includes the Grade 3 Fred W. Hooper Handicap.

Hollywood: Lucky Chappy will try CashCall Futurity

INGLEWOOD, Calif. – Trainer Graham Motion won the Hollywood Turf Cup last weekend with Sanagas, was to take three shots at the Matriarch Stakes on Friday, and will seek another Grade 1 race at Hollywood Park before the meet is out when he sends Lucky Chappy west for the $750,000 CashCall Futurity on Dec. 17

The Futurity will mark the first race on the main track for Lucky Chappy, who was fourth in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf and third in the Bourbon Stakes at Keeneland. The CashCall Futurity would be his third start in the United States since arriving from Italy.

Aqueduct: Distance should suit Managed Account in Remsen Stakes

Adam Coglianese/NYRA
Managed Account wins the Toccet Stakes, the Remsen prep.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Even as she was running him in sprint races, trainer Teresa Pompay always felt Managed Account would be better suited to races at longer distances.

Pompay was proven correct when Managed Account successfully stretched out to a mile to win an overnight stakes at Aqueduct three weeks ago. On Saturday, Managed Account will stretch out around two turns and try 1 1/8 miles for the first time in a seemingly wide-open renewal of the Grade 2, $200,000 Remsen Stakes for juvenile colts at Aqueduct.

Hollywood: Jeranimo back on short rest in Citation

INGLEWOOD, Calif. – Just three weeks ago, Jeranimo was running against the best milers in the world at the Breeders’ Cup. It is not the normal inclination of his trainer, Mike Pender, to run the horse back on three weeks rest. But Pender said Jeranimo bounced out of the BC Mile as if it “didn’t take anything out of him,” and that’s why he’s accepting his high weight assignment of 122 pounds Saturday in the Grade 2, $250,000 Citation Handicap at Hollywood Park.

Fair Grounds: Daisy Devine not sneaking up in Pago Hop

Coady Photography/Keeneland
Daisy Devine should be favored in Saturday's Pago Hop at Fair Grounds.

NEW ORLEANS – A horseplayer who had wagered $2 to win on Daisy Devine in all nine of her starts would be, well, a very happy horseplayer. Those $18 worth of win bets have brought back $190.80 through Daisy Devine’s four victories, two at astronomical odds. Last December at Fair Grounds, she won a first-level allowance race at 40-1, and last month at Keeneland, she captured the Valley View Stakes at 43-1.

Aqueduct: Haynesfield out for Cigar redemption

Barbara D. Livingston
Haynesfield, on right with Ramon Dominguez riding, wins the Empire Classic.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – One year later, Haynesfield’s narrow loss to Jersey Town in the 2010 Cigar Mile still gnaws at his connections. Saturday, when the Grade 1, $250,000 Cigar Mile is run for the 23rd time at Aqueduct, Haynesfield will get the chance to erase that painful memory while salvaging what has been for the most part a lost 5-year-old season.

Aqueduct: Captivating Lass steps up in Demoiselle

OZONE PARK, N.Y. − When Kiaran McLaughlin shipped Captivating Lass to Parx to make her debut, it wasn’t to avoid the stiffer competition in New York. He liked the fact he was able to start the big, leggy filly in a race around two turns and loved the idea of running for a $67,000 purse.

Captivating Lass, dueling outside of Lasamanamama, drew off to win by two lengths, finishing the mile-and-70-yard race in hand while recording a modest 62 Beyer.

Woodbine: Fehr ending meet on high note

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Alec Fehr endured some lean times last year, recording just two wins here and another two at Fort Erie, and his barn continued to have a quiet time in the early months of this meeting. But things of been looking up of late, with Fehr having greeted 11 of his last 39 starters in the winner’s circle and 15 in total this meet heading into Thursday’s program.

Woodbine: Biamonte has pair in Kingarvie

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Trainer Ralph Biamonte will take two shots at Saturday’s $125,000 Kingarvie Stakes, when he runs favorites Jenna’s Wabbit and Run in Aruba in the 1 1/16-mile event for Ontario-sired 2-year-olds at Woodbine.

Jenna’s Wabbit performed well in all three of his races early in the meet, but has really put it all together since returning from a layoff.

Calder: Mambo Meister outclasses field in Fred W. Hooper

Tom Keyser
Mambo Meister will run next in the Spend a Buck at Calder on Oct. 15.

MIAMI – Trainer Phil Gleaves entered Mambo Meister in both the Grade 3 Fred W. Hooper Handicap and the Grade 2 W.L. McKnight just to keep his options open. But in the end, the decision where to run his multiple Grade 3 stakes winner Saturday afternoon at Calder was really a no-brainer.
