HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Never Retreat’s racing career is not over yet.

Never Retreat was scheduled to be retired following her 2011 finale in Hollywood Park’s Grade 1 Matriarch. But after finishing a disappointing third as the 4-5 favorite three weeks ago at Hollywood Park, trainer Chris Block decided to give his Grade 1 winner one last chance to show her stuff before heading off to the breeding shed this spring.

Gulfstream: Ullapool has a test to pass

Tom Keyser
Ullapool could step up to stakes company with a good race Thursday.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Trainer Wesley Ward is confident that Ullapool is stakes material. But first, the lightly raced juvenile filly must earn herself the right to step up to the next level with a victory in Thursday’s $53,500 co-feature at Gulfstream Park, a 6 1/2-furlong optional claiming dash that drew a field of eight 2-year-old fillies. The race shares top billing on the card along with a second entry-level allowance race for 2-year-olds scheduled to be run at 1 1/16 miles over the inner turf course.

Martin Garcia (right), shown with owner Robert Wright, is contending for the Hollywood riding title.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. – It was hardly the Christmas season that jockey Martin Garcia envisioned.

A year ago, as the Hollywood Park fall meeting ended and the Santa Anita winter-spring meeting approached, Garcia was about 2,000 miles to the southeast, in his hometown of Veracruz, Mexico, stuck in immigration limbo and visiting relatives.

“I kept thinking, I’ll be back,” he said. “I didn’t want to stress myself. They told me it would be no problem, but that I had to wait.”

Fair Grounds: Old-timers have some run left

Dustin Orona Photography
Red Rock Creek, a 10-year-old trained by Steve Asmussen, is seeking his first win of 2011.

Fair Grounds might as well dub its Wednesday program Old-Timers Day. There aren’t many very good horses on the nine-race card, nor is there even a solid feature, but a couple seniors of note are scheduled to make an appearance.

Eight-year-old Good and Lucky first raced over the Fair Grounds track in December 2006. He liked it, winning an off-the-turf edition of the Woodchopper Handicap.

Hollywood Park: Rowdy Gal gets tryout for Santa Ynez Stakes

INGLEWOOD, Calif. – Three optional claimers at Hollywood Park on Wednesday could offer clues for stakes races at the upcoming Santa Anita winter-spring meeting.

The Hollywood Park autumn meeting begins its final week Wednesday and ends Sunday. The Santa Anita winter-spring meeting has its traditional opening day Dec. 26.

Wednesday’s second race at Hollywood Park is an optional claimer over six furlongs on turf for 2-year-old fillies. The race could serve as a prep for the $150,000 Santa Ynez Stakes for 3-year-old fillies over 6 1/2 furlongs on Jan. 15.
