Hansen's road to Derby likely to begin in Holy Bull

Hansen gets a postrace kiss from his owner, breeder, and namesake, Dr. Kendall Hansen, after the Breeders' Cup Juvenile. If all goes to plan, Hansen will run in the Holy Bull, Fountain of Youth, and Florida Derby before starting in the Kentucky Derby.

Hansen is spending the winter at Gulfstream Park, where trainer Mike Maker has mapped out a schedule that allows Hansen to remain in Florida and get two or three preps before the May 5 Kentucky Derby.

Portland Meadows: Ferguson gets 1,000th Thoroughbred win

Trainer Jim Fergason, who has won six Portland Meadows training titles, saddled his 1,000th Thoroughbred winner Wednesday at Portland when Mo’s Flashy Dash scored a one-length victory as the favorite in a 5 1/2-furlong $2,500 claiming race.

Fergason, 59, has been training since 1969. His first winner came on a 99-1 shot in a Quarter Horse race,

“I’m happy I got this win here,” said Fergason. “Probably 900 of those wins came right here, so I’m really happy about that.”

Oaklawn: Hughes goes from racing official to horse owner

Jeanette Hughes, a key racing official with Lone Star Park since the Dallas-area track opened in 1997, has resigned from her position and will have her first starter as an owner in Friday’s seventh race at Oaklawn. The horse is Nurse Goodnight, and she is trained by Hughes’s fiancé, Allen Milligan.

Hughes, 47, resigned in December after serving as the assistant racing secretary during each of Lone Star’s meets for Thoroughbreds. She was part of the team brought on by the track’s original director of racing and racing secretary, Larry Craft.

Sam Houston opens with new partner, new wagers

Sam Houston Race Park in Houston will begin its racing season Friday night with a new ownership structure, an expanded wagering format, improved purses, and a redesigned Texas Champions Day. The 31-date meet will continue through March 12, with its biggest race, the Grade 3, $200,000 Connally Turf, to be run Jan. 28.

“We’re looking forward to a great 2012,” said Andrea Young, president of Sam Houston. “We haven’t seen this kind of enthusiasm for our racing within the community and from our own employees and the folks on our backside for a real long time.”

NEW ORLEANS – It’s not like Larry Jones didn’t appreciate going to Beverly Hills and coming back to New Orleans on Tuesday with a Horse of the Year trophy for his stable star, Havre de Grace. But the Jones vibe just does not jibe with Southern California, and a betting man would lay money on Jones trading a black-tie affair for a morning at the track.

Which is where Jones was Wednesday, returned to his normal routine at Fair Grounds following a brief excursion to Monday’s Eclipse Awards ceremony.

Kentucky Derby Future Wager pool schedule finalized

Churchill Downs has scheduled its three Kentucky Derby Future Wager weekends for Feb. 10-12, March 2-4, and March 30-April 1. The lone Kentucky Oaks Future Wager pool will be held concurrently with the final Derby Future Wager weekend. All of the pools will offer win and exacta wagering.

Aqueduct: Alvarado puts spills behind him

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - Bruised, perhaps, but not broken, jockey Junior Alvarado has not let being involved in two spills in an eight-day period at Aqueduct  hinder him.

Alvarado, who was unseated from mounts on Jan. 6 and Jan. 14, is the third-leading rider at this meet with 35 wins from 197 mounts. He trails only Ramon Dominguez (41 for 156) and Cornelio Velasquez (37 for 206) in the standings.

Santa Anita: Norvsky will test stamina in San Marcos

Norvsky closes fast to beat Jeranimo by 1 1/2 lengths in the San Gabriel Stakes.

Norvsky won the most prestigious race of his career in Monday’s Grade 2 San Gabriel Stakes at Santa Anita. He will try for the longest win of his career in the $150,000 San Marcos Stakes over 1 1/4 miles on turf on Feb. 11, trainer Don Warren said.

Aqueduct: Midnight Visit in nice spot for return

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Midnight Visit appears to have found a nice spot to make her first start in nine months and first against open company when the 4-year-old New York-bred filly takes on six rivals in Friday’s second-level allowance feature at Aqueduct.

Midnight Visit, a daughter of Henny Hughes, has won 3 of 4 career starts, with her only loss coming in the Proud Puppy Stakes at a mile and 70 yards last March. She is 3 for 3 in races run at six furlongs, the distance of Friday’s $64,000 race.
