Fair Grounds: Santo Gato goes for three straight

If he were so inclined, trainer Merrill Scherer might spin a wizard’s tale of how he turned Santo Gato around this winter at Fair Grounds. A 4-year-old Kitten’s Joy gelding, Santo Gato came into the meet a 16-start maiden, with losses in turf routes and turf sprints, on dirt and Polytrack, and in races from New Orleans to New York. But he comes into Wednesday’s featured eighth race with two straight wins, the most recent a dominant first-level allowance victory in a turf sprint.

Gulfstream: Zito not rushing Dialed In

Barbara D. Livingston
Dialed In is being aimed by trainer Nick Zito at major Saratoga stakes.

BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. – The strength of the local handicap division will be on display here over the next several weeks, beginning with Saturday’s Florida Sunshine Millions Classic and continuing Feb. 11 with the Grade 1 Donn Handicap.

One horse who figures to fit right into the upper echelon of the local division but who will be sitting out both those races is last year’s Florida Derby winner, Dialed In. Trainer Nick Zito is taking his time bringing Dialed In back from minor surgery that put a premature end to his 3-year-old campaign following the Preakness.

Aqueduct: Mineswept should get good pace set-up

Tom Keyser
Mineswept was claimed in November for $35,000.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - Tried and true veterans of the New York-bred sprint stakes program have assembled for another meeting in a somewhat less prestigious – though no less contentious – event Wednesday at Aqueduct.

Just three months ago, Mineswept, Driven by Success, Smokin Hero, and Be Bullish ran third, fourth, sixth, and seventh, respectively, in the $125,000 Hudson Stakes at Belmont Park. Wednesday that same quartet along with three of their friends meet in a $54,000 optional claiming/New York-bred allowance that serves as the best race on Aqueduct’s nine-race program.

Include Me Out wins the Grade 2 La Canada Stakes by 4 1/4 lengths.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Battle-tested against a stakes-winning stablemate last fall, Include Me Out won her first stakes in Sunday’s $150,000 La Canada Stakes at Santa Anita, running in the sort of race her trainer thought would suit the 4-year-old filly.

Include Me Out started over 1 1/16 miles for the first time and gave a career-best performance to win the Grade 2 stakes by 4 1/4 lengths over Great Hot.

“Pedigree-wise, she wanted two turns,” trainer Ron Ellis said of Include Me Out.
