Without cooperation from Mother Nature – and she does not appear to be feeling helpful this weekend – the most exciting horse entered on an appealing Sunday racing program at Fair Grounds will stay in the barn.
ARCADIA, Calif. - Trainer Doug O’Neill will send out Thirtyfirststreet in Saturday’s $100,000 Crystal Water Stakes for older California-breds over 1 1/16 miles at Santa Anita.
Thirtyfirststreet won the Lone Star Derby on turf in Texas last May. He lost his next five starts before winning an optional claimer over 1 1/16 miles against open company on the main track here on Jan. 12.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Sacristy, who began 2012 with a nice off-the-pace win in the Grade 3 Old Hat, will seek to end the month of January with a another stakes victory when she heads a field of seven entered for Sunday’s Grade 2, $200,000 Forward Gal at seven furlongs.
Sacristy will face three of the same horses she beat in the Old Hat, including runner-up Say a Novena and fourth-place finisher Quick Flip.
HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Ever So Lucky, who ran two bang-up races in a span of 15 days last November at Churchill Downs, arrived at Gulfstream shortly after 6 a.m. Friday following a 12-hour van ride from Camden, S.C. After getting a little rest, Ever So Lucky went to the track for a mile gallop.
Trainer Jonathan Sheppard was scheduled to arrive in south Florida in time for training Saturday morning. He said Ever So Lucky could work Sunday or Monday. Sheppard is targeting the Grade 2 Hutcheson Stakes, a seven-furlong race Feb. 11, for Ever So Lucky’s 3-year-old debut.
HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – While the Holy Bull will be the focus of Sunday’s card, an allowance for 3-year-olds held about 90 minutes earlier will garner a lot of attention as well.
Nine 3-year-olds were entered in the first-level allowance race at 1 1/16 miles, including Casual Trick, runner-up in the Gulfstream Park Derby; El Padrino, third as the favorite in the Grade 2 Remsen; and Take Charge Indy, fourth in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. The race is carded as the seventh.
HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – The south Florida road to the Kentucky Derby will kick off in earnest Sunday when six aspiring Derby prospects, including recently crowned juvenile champion Hansen, square off at a mile in the $400,000 Holy Bull at Gulfstream Park.
The Grade 3 Holy Bull is the first of three major preps on the Derby trail at Gulfstream, along with the Grade 2 Fountain of Youth on Feb. 26 and Grade 1 Florida Derby on March 31.
OLDSMAR, Fla. – Cat Park and Juliet Tango, both seeking their third straight wins over the Tampa Bay Downs turf course, top their fields Saturday in the second leg of the Tampa Test, a series of starter handicap routes for horses who have started for a claiming price of $16,000 or less in 2011-12.
The four-race series that has divisions for males and females, concludes on March 24 with a pair of 1 3/8-mile marathons. The series started with mile races on Jan. 7.
Askbut I Won’ttell had a legitimate excuse when she finished 11th at 7-2 in the South Beach Stakes on Dec. 11. She bled.
Saturday at Gulfstream Park, Askbut I Won’ttell will seek a rebound in the $150,000 Florida Sunshine Millions Filly and Mare Turf, a race in which she finished second last year.
“She did bleed the last time. That impacted her performance,” trainer Chris Block said. “And maybe I didn’t have her ready to rock 100 percent last time. She’s trained well since then and seems to be coming to this the right way. I think she’ll give a good account of herself.”
Zero Rate Policy led for every jump but the last when he lost a nose decision to Apriority in the Grade 3 Mr. Prospector at Gulfstream Park on Dec. 31. With different tactics, Zero Rate Policy will look to turn the tables on Apriority in the $150,000 Sunshine Millions Sprint.
Zero Rate Policy inherited the lead when he was along the inside and Apriority stumbled in the Mr. Prospector. Prior to that, Zero Rate Policy came from off the pace to win the Sunshine Stakes here on Dec. 3.
HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – Hamazing Destiny will make his first start since the Breeders’ Cup on Saturday in the $50,000 King Cotton at Oaklawn Park. The six-furlong race for 4-year-olds and up is the first prep on the road to the meet’s biggest prize for the division, the Grade 3, $200,000 Count Fleet Sprint Handicap.
The King Cotton drew a field of five, including River Bear, who won the $50,000 Holiday Cheer at Turfway Park in his last start Dec. 31, and Riley Tucker, who comes off a third-place finish in a Fair Grounds allowance Dec. 26.
