England: Kazzia upsets 1000 Guineas

Kazzia won the the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket in England on Sunday in a 14-1 upset for Godolphin.

The 1000 Guineas lost its favorite, Queen's Logic, when she turned up lame on Saturday morning. Trainer Mick Channon said the injury was slight and that she would return in the Irish 1000 Guineas on May 26.

England: O'Brien 1-2 in 2000 Guineas

Irish training sensation Aidan O'Brien dominated the 2002 renewal of Britain's first classic of the season, the Sagitta 2000 Guineas, saddling the first two home, Rock of Gibraltar and Hawk Wing, at Newmarket on Saturday.

O'Brien quartet tops 2000 Guineas

Aidan O'Brien will send out four horses, led by the 3-2 favorite Hawk Wing, in Saturday's 2000 Guineas Stakes at Newmarket in England. They will be opposed by a three-pronged Godolphin entry headed by Naheef, the mount of Frankie Dettori.

The winner of the Group 1 National Stakes in his latest start in September, Hawk Wing is one of 12 Guineas starters in the 22-strong field who will be making their seasonal debuts in Britain's one-mile classic.

Dupont takes Italian Guineas

Castle Gandolfo's chances in the Kentucky Derby received a boost Wednesday when Dupont, whom he had beaten into third place in the Fosters-International Trial, won the Group 2 Premio Parioli (Italian 2000 Guineas) at the Capannelle in Rome.

Dupont, 7-1, just got up to beat Fisich by a nose, getting the mile in 1:37.80 on good ground. The 5-2 favorite, Salselon, was sixth in the field of 18.

Three Group 2 races on May Day

Wednesday is the May Day holiday in Europe and the racing community will mark the event with three Group 2 races in France and Italy.

Bedawin rates mild favoritism in the one-mile Prix du Muguet at Saint-Cloud for older horses. Trained by Francois Doumen, Bedawin is coming off a victory in the Group 3 Prix Edmond Blanc over the course and distance, but he will be tested by the John Gosden-trained British invader Binary File. Binary File makes his 4-year-old debut after having won a maiden and an allowance in his only two starts to date last year.
