Balestrini takes Ballysax at 33-1

The unheralded Balestrini pulled off a 33-1 upset in the Group 3 Ballysax Stakes at Leopardstown on Sunday, as his odds-on Aidan O'Brien-trained stablemate, Alberto Giacometti, struggled to a third-place finish in the 1 1/4-mile Ballysax, a prep for the Epsom Derby.

Muqbil, Tante Rose win at Newbury

Muqbil and Tante Rose earned their places in the two Guineas classics on Saturday by winning their Group 3 trials, both over a straight seven furlongs, at Newbury. Although they each scored by 1 1/4 lengths, Tante Rose was the more impressive, coming with a strong run from the back in the Dubai Duty Free Stakes.

But Tante Rose is not certain to stay the extra furlong of the 1000 Guineas, on May 4, while Muqbil, who is by Swain, should benefit from a longer distance than that of Saturday's Lane's End Greenham Stakes.

One might envy the Irishman's plethora of riches at his Ballydoyle yard in Ireland. Instead, let us sit back and admire the bluebloods with which Messrs. Magnier and Tabor keep him well supplied.
