Staying power now a foreign notion

NEW YORK - Who says that horses bred in Kentucky can't stay a mile and a half?

With Light Shift and Peeping Fawn, Kentucky-breds both, finishing one-two in last Friday's English Oaks, a day before the Kentucky-bred Legerete won the Group 3 Prix de Royaumont at Chantilly, there should be nationwide rejoicing over the fact that the Bluegrass State can breed fillies capable of getting 1 1/2 miles at the highest level. A closer look, however, reveals that these three fillies are far from their old Kentucky home.

Not much between French Oaks fillies

There is little to choose from between Coquerelle and Vadapolina in Group 1, $1.08 million Prix de Diane, the 1 5/16-mile French Oaks, which will have its 159th running at Chantilly on Sunday.

Trained by Jean-Claude Rouget, Coquerelle remained undefeated in four starts when she took the Diane's key prep, the 1 1/4-mile Group 1 Prix Saint-Alary at Longchamp May 20. The Zamindar filly will again have Christophe Lemaire in the sadddle.

Fallon returns with a victory at Tipperary

Kieren Fallon, back in action after serving a six-month suspension imposed by the French stewards for a cocaine positive, made a victorious return at Tipperary on Thursday evening when he rode The Bogberry to win a 7 1/2-furlong conditions race.

Showing no ill effects from his long absence, Fallon guided The Bogberry, the 4-7 favorite, to a neck victory over Rainbow Crossing. The Bogberry, trained by Aidan O'Brien, is a half-brother to Liscanna, the winner of Wednesday's Group 3 Ballyogan Stakes at Leopardstown.

Vengeance of Rain has distance edge at Sha Tin

Viva Pataca and Vengeance of Rain will duke it out in the 1 1/2-mile $1 million Hong Kong Champions and Chater Cup at Sha Tin on Sunday. The two ran first and second in the Queen Elizabeth II Cup going a quarter-mile shorter on April 29, but the longer distance should favor Vengeance of Rain, whose victory in the 12-furlong Dubai Sheema Classic was most impressive.

French Derby looks wide open

The $2 million Prix du Jockey-Club at Chantilly on Sunday is a race filled with potentially good 3-year-olds who have yet to show anything resembling classic form on the racetrack. Also known as the French Derby, the 1 5/16-mile Jockey-Club has drawn a crowded field of 20 colts, half of whom would not cause a raised eyebrow in the winners' circle.

O'Brien has eight in Epsom Derby

Trainer Aidan O'Brien will send out an eight-strong battalion of Irish invaders in an attempt to bring down the 4-5 favorite Authorized in Saturday's $2.47 million Epsom Derby.

The unprecedented assault on the 1 1/2-mile classic may appear to be an effort to accomplish through quantity what cannot be achieved through quality, but at least five of O'Brien runners have a good chance of winning. Whether they can overcome the talented Authorized on a turf course that is likely to be no better than good to soft, and therefore very much to the favorite's liking, remains to be seen.
