His breeder and trainer, Jim Bolger, made the announcement on Thursday after a scan of the Galileo colt's aching right front knee, the same one that had caused him to be withdrawn from both the 2000 Guineas and the Epsom Derby.

Saturday's renewal at Goodwood promises to be just as exciting, as the Group 1, $405,000 Nassau has attracted five Group 1-winning fillies and mares from three different countries.

The $343,000 Prix d'Astarte has drawn its usual sterling field of fillies and mares on Sunday, opening day of Deauville's prestigious summer meeting, but the rain-softened ground that is plaguing European racing this season threatens many of the favorites who will line up for Group 1 mile.

Ascot's midsummer centerpiece, the $1.5 million King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes, is normally one of the four or five best races in the world. It has been cut up badly this year, however, as all three of Europe's major Derby winners - Authorized, Soldier of Fortune, and Lawman - are bypassing Saturday's 1 1/2-mile Group 1 contest.

Yutaka Take became the all-time winningest jockey in Japan Racing Association history on Saturday when he rode Hishi Once More to victory in a six-furlong turf maiden raceat Kokura Racecourse in Kyushu. The win was the 38-year-old Take's 2,944th and surpassed the mark of Yukio Okabe, who retired in 2005 at the age of 56 with 2,943 wins.
