Poised for worldwide stardom

Dubai Racing Club
Curlin already has a victory at Nad Al Sheba, having an easy time of it in his World Cup prep.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates - To catch a glimpse of Street Sense, Hard Spun, or Any Given Saturday, three elite 3-year-olds of 2007, take a trip to Darley Stud in Lexington, Ky. The trio began stallion careers there this winter, whisked away from the races in their youth.

You can find the best 3-year-old of 2007 out on the track.

Millionaire filly taking on elders at the Curragh

Lush Lashes became a millionaire in her first start when she bankrolled $1,367,771 for winning the Goffs Fillies Million at the Curragh last September. She had been bought for just $105,000 by the wife of her trainer, Jim Bolger, at the 2006 Goffs Million Sale.

Crunch time for Europe's classic season

NEW YORK - The rush to the European classic season will commence in earnest next Sunday at Leopardstown in Ireland, leaving no more than four weeks for trainers to prepare for the first classic of the season, Newmarket's 2000 Guineas, which falls this year, as usual, on Kentucky Derby Day, May 3.

Record price at Australian sale

Australia's Magic Millions finished its week of selling select yearlings with a sale record of $2.2 million (Australian) for each of two Redoute's Choice colts.

Both colts, whose prices were about $2.02 million in U.S. currency, went to Nathan Tinkler's Patinack Farm. Tinkler is a relatively new investor in the Thoroughbred game but has already made a splash. At this auction alone, he spent more than $16 million for a total of 59 yearlings.

Godolphin pair strong in Duty Free

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates - Godolphin has been the runaway Dubai World Cup Night leader in wins, but the locally based juggernaut pitched a shutout in 2007. On Saturday, Godolphin has chances in all six Thoroughbred stakes on the World Cup program, perhaps none better than in the $5 million Duty Free.

At the top in two games

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates - Imagine someone like a former NFL all-star quarterback taking up training Thoroughbreds and making it big. That would be about the position that Mick Channon occupies in England.

Channon, 59, was captain of the English national soccer team nearly 30 years ago. In 46 games playing striker, he scored 21 goals - about enough to make him a national hero in that soccer-crazed land.

"Believe it or not, I used to be slim and light on my feet," Channon said after the World Cup post-position draw Wednesday night, placing hands on a well-fed belly.

By any name, Viva Pataca looks best in Sheema

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates - When a horse is imported to Hong Kong, the owner is liable to change the animal's name. For instance, a gelding who raced under the name Comic Strip during 2004 and 2005 in England became Viva Pataca when he wound up in Hong Kong in 2006. Saturday at Nad Al Sheba, in the Sheema Classic, four other words apply: The horse to beat.

Curlin draws wide post for World Cup

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates - Thirteen horses were officially entered in Saturday's $6 million Dubai World Cup on Wednesday night, and Horse of the Year Curlin will break from outside all but one of them.

Curlin, the favorite for the world's richest horse race, drew post 12, with only A.P. Arrow farther out. But the wide draw did not faze assistant trainer Scott Blasi, who said his main concern was staying away from the rail.

"With him, I'd rather draw post six or out than six or in," Blasi said.

Nearby blast creates surreal scene

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates - Just after 7 a.m. on Wednesday, at Godolphin's Al Quoz training center, horses were being shown to the assembled media at Godolphin's annual open house, held each Dubai World Cup week. The training center, which houses some of the most expensive horses in the world during the winter, is manicured, pristine, and tranquil. The horses are galloped or jogged one by one in front of a small grandstand, and as they go past, racing manager Simon Crisford tells who they are, what they have done, and speaks of future plans.
