Lucarno wires Princess of Wales's at Newmarket

Lucarno returned to the form that won him the classic St. Leger Stakes last fall as he led throughout to take the Group 2, $198,000 Group 2 Princess of Wales's Stakes at Newmarket on Thursday.

Trained by John Gosden for his breeder, George Strawbridge, the 4-year-old son of Dynaformer was given a brilliant ride by Jimmy Fortune to defeat the fast-closing defending title-holder and 2-1 favorite, Papal Bull, by 1 1/4 lengths despite carrying a five-pound penalty for his Group 1 St. Leger triumph.

Nahoodh wins Falmouth Stakes

Jockey Frankie Dettori brought Nahoodh with a late run to win the $393,000 Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket, giving the 3-year-old filly her first Group 1 triumph. A 10-1 shot, she defeated Infallible by 1 3/4 lengths after the doors to victory were opened by the last-minute withdrawal of Darjina because of rain-softened ground and by a second consecutive poor effort by Finsceal Beo.

Trained by Mark Johnston, Nahoodh covered the Falmouth's straight mile on good to soft ground in 1:38.60.

Tattersalls nmbers down

A Fantastic Light broodmare carrying a Sakhee foal sold for about $411,600 as the top-priced horse Tuesday at the opening day of the Tattersalls July sale in Newmarket, England.

The 5-year-old mare, Welsh Cake, sold for 200,000 guineas to Mike Caddy's Horizon Bloodstock on behalf of Caddy's farm, Heatherwold Stud, in Berkshire. A daughter of the Green Desert mare Khubza, she is a half-sister to two group winners, Trans Island and Welsh Diva.

Kevin and Sue Mercer's Usk Valley Stud consigned Welsh Cake to the auction.

$411K mare tops Tattersalls sale session

A Fantastic Light broodmare carrying a Sakhee foal sold for about $411,600 as the top-priced horse Tuesday on opening day of the Tattersalls July sale in Newmarket, England.

Anna Pavlova right back

Anna Pavlova will be wheeled back on just five days' rest from one Group 2 to another when she challenges males in the $198,000 Princess of Wales's Stakes at Newmarket on Thursday.

Anna Pavlova, a 5-year-old daughter of Danehill Dancer who was the 3 1/4-length winner of the Lancashire Oaks at Haydock Park on Saturday, will be tested at the same 1 1/2 miles in the Princess of Wales, which will be run on Newmarket's July Course.

Aga Khan in Australian venture

Prominent Australian nursery Arrowfield Stud, which stands popular sire Redoute's Choice, has launched a venture with the Aga Khan to breed and sell yearlings at Australian auctions.

Under the program, the Aga Khan has sent six mares to Australia, where they will be bred to Arrowfield stallions. Arrowfield, which is owned by John Messara, and the Aga Khan will point the resulting foals for Australia's select yearling auctions.

Kamsin takes German Derby

Kamsin returned to form just in time to capture the $840,000 German Derby at Hamburg on Sunday as he thundered to a three-length victory over longshot Ostland.

Kamsin, trained by Peter Schiergen, scored at 6-1 after having failed as the favorite in the Group 3 Bavarian Classic last time. He gave rider Andrasch Starke his fifth German Derby triumph. Schiergen also saddled the the 17-1 runner-up.

Mount Nelson wins squeaker at Sandown

Mount Nelson came with an undeniable late run to nip Phoenix Tower on the line in the $991,000 Eclipse Stakes at Sandown Park on Saturday. Powered home by jockey Johnny Murtagh, Mount Nelson gave his trainer, Aidan O'Brien, his 12th Group 1 triumph of the year.

Irish classics to be uprooted

Delays in the construction of a new grandstand at the Curragh, as well as the development of the surrounding area, will result in the closing of the Irish racecourse from July 26, 2009, until the opening of the 2011 season in March of that year, the Irish Turf Club announced Friday.
